Often, these are welcomed because it’s always interesting to watch different filmmakers and writers take a stab at a major news event. But sometimes, there is one definitive version that renders the rest irrelevant. And in the mind of Jennifer Lawrence, watching Amanda Seyfriend nail the role of Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout” made her second guess starring in the upcoming film, “Bad Blood.”

The most crowded season in television history just came to a close for Emmy voters, leaving professionals scrambling to figure out how to dig out from the weight of so many new and returning shows. Programs that had been delayed because of COVID like “Atlanta” and “Barry” came roaring back, and all of the major networks and streamers seemed to invest in the Limited Series game. The result was a sense that television had become almost overwhelming, making it harder than ever to hear the best voices through all the noise.

Hulu’s terrific hit mini-series “The Dropout” from showrunner/writer/creator Elizabeth Meriwether (“New Girl”), starring Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”), is easily one of our favorite shows of the year thus far. The mini-series was terrific (read our review here), and Seyfried’s performance is outstanding, and surely Emmy bound. The mini-series covers the unbelievable true story of Elizabeth Holmes, the infamous health care revolutionary/silicon valley “visionary” that was behind the rise and fall of Theranos.

Elizabeth Holmes has reached the epitome of docuseries fame. Well, infamy might be the better choice of words. Thanks to a podcast and recent doc, the head of the controversial company Theranos has joined Ted Bundy, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Adnan Syed, and Steven Avery as folks that have achieved new levels of fame based on incredibly interesting circumstances in their lives. However, of that group, Holmes is the only one that hasn’t murdered someone or been convicted of murder…so there’s that.
