Weber earned for “The Disaster Artist” is a long time coming. From “500 Days of Summer” to “The Spectacular Now” to “Fault In Their Stars” the writing duo have shown a unique talent to bring a fresh perspective to familiar genres. At first glance “The Disaster Artist” seems like an odd fit for the writing partners, but as they note in our podcast interview at its core it’s more a movie about friendship than the making of the infamous cult movie “The Room.”

For those that know the story of Tommy Wiseau‘s bizarre drama and it’s improbable theatrical release “The Disaster Artist” was likely a joy.

However, as you watch the film, there’s one thing you can’t judge – the screenplay. Sure, you can listen to dialogue, and understand the story’s structure, but for the most part, the screenplay is a mystery.

For those hoping to dive headfirst into the screenplays of many of the 2018 Oscar nominated films, No Film School has you covered.

The big winner tonight was “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” which took Best Picture — Drama, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay.

The quartet of wins for the Fox Searchlight was somewhat of a surprise, given that during much of the awards season run-up, the love for the film seemed to be somewhat cool for the guilds.

To be fair, we’ve included a couple that have human participants, but only for form’s sake. Maybe it’s because it’s a global trend, maybe because The Playlist is a hotbed of perverts, but it seems to us the movie and TV year in sex was more than usually characterized by interspecies, mystical, plant-based and/or supernatural sex, and quite a few of the more ostensibly “traditional” sex scenes that impressed us did so for very unsexy reasons (we’re not naming names, but Yorgos Lanthimos).

Written, directed, and starring Tommy Wiseau, its famous for just how spectacularly awful it is. And in a world filled with plenty of bad movies, “The Room” rises above all the rest not just because of the horrible acting, writing, set design, and everything else, but also for the legendary behind-the-scenes antics of Wiseau. These near legendary stories are so strange that it’s hard to believe that any of them are actually true.

But if it meant two things, it would be that it begins our annual binge-look at the year in film and TV gone by. Over the coming weeks between now and New Year’s Eve, we’ll be examining 2017 in cinematic entertainment from every angle, from our least favorite movies to the best in the small-screen, and even looking forward to what’s to come.

There’s a lot going on at the end of the year and that’s not even when we account the personal stresses that come along with the holiday season. December is pretty light for the first two weeks with only really three films posed to make any sort of splash and then the latest in the “Star Wars” saga enters the race and obliterates its competition.

Back in 2013, the actor/writer/director/producer penned a piece for Vice about Tommy Wiseau‘s cult favorite, and the book written by Greg Sestero that would eventually become the source material for “The Disaster Artist.” And the conclusion of the piece crystallizes everything Franco brings to his movie, which is loving towards Wiseau, even as it recognizes his flaws and absurdities:

So, A24 has dropped a new trailer that pivots in that direction… though, it’s really not representative of the film at all.

As you know James Franco directs and stars in the movie playing Tommy Wiseau, the man responsible for the cult classic disasterpiece, “The Room.” The film is certainly hilarious, but it’s also respectful of Wiseau, and is as much about the wild making of “The Room,” as it is about friendship, ambition, and against all odds, making something that has a lasting impression, good or bad.

As previously announced, Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” will open the festival on Thursday, Nov. 9. It’s the first opening night film that’s not a world premiere in at least five years. The closing night film is Ridley Scott’s “All The Money In The World” which will have its world premiere on Nov.

Here’s the official synopsis:

With “The Disaster Artist”, James Franco transforms the tragicomic true-story of aspiring filmmaker and infamous Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau—an artist whose passion was as sincere as his methods were questionable—into a celebration of friendship, artistic expression, and dreams pursued against insurmountable odds.

But what turned out instead was what many consider one of the very worst movies of all time.

Wiseau wrote, directed and financed “The Room” back in 2003. However, the result was so bad that it has transcended genres and is now known as a cult disaster comedy.

Let’s take a quick overview.

The biggest surprise in the documentary section is Morgan Spurlock‘s “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!,” a sequel to his breakout hit, which presumably confirms that fast food is still awful for you if you only eat it for a month.

Not only does he play the oddball director, but he helmed the film too, and apparently went a bit method on set.

[SXSW Review]" align="left" style="margin: 0 20px 20px 0;max-width:100%" />
It’s a film about the making of arguably the worst movie ever made. That is how the team behind “The Disaster Artist” will hope to sell it to a public that may have yet to experience the wonder of Tommy Wiseau‘s self-financed passion project, “The Room.” Just as “Plan 9 from Outer Space” had Tim Burton‘s “Ed Wood“ and “Troll 2” had Michael Paul Stephenson‘s documentary, “Best Worst Movie,” so now does “The Room” have James Franco‘s “The Disaster Artist.” How it will play to the uninitiated remains a legitimate question, but one thing is for certain: its base are going to be in Valhalla.

And as per usual there’s a lot to choose from.

The opening and closing night films this year are quite big, with Terrence Malick bringing his music movie “Song To Song” to launch the fest, while the sci-fi “Life” with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds closes things out.

Because the film finds Franco playing Tommy Wiseau, the eccentric director of cult favorite “The Room.”
