Outside of a few exceptions, the 2019 summer box office is getting off to a really slow start. Sure, you have films like ‘John Wick 3’ and “Aladdin” doing good business, but for the most part, we’ve seen disappointing debut after disappointing debut. And this weekend was no different, as “Men in Black: International” and “Shaft” underperform.

The fourth film in the ‘Men in Black’ franchise, ‘International’ failed to re-energize the series, as it appears that not even the combined talents of Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, and Emma Thompson could get people to check it out.

When it was announced a year ago that acclaimed filmmaker Jim Jarmusch would be taking on a zombie film for his follow-up to the character drama of “Paterson,” people were confused but also excited. South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho‘s social satire “Parasite” won the coveted Palme d’Or prize (a first for South Korea), and Mati Diop’s “Atlantique,” won the runner-up Grand Prix prize, becoming the first Black female director to win a Cannes prize (after 72 years, she was also somehow the first Black female director in competition).

CANNES – Having been lucky enough to sit down with Tilda Swinton many times over the years I shouldn’t be surprised that she’s reached yet another pinnacle in her career.  The Oscar winner for “Michael Clayton” rarely makes a bad choice and that’s often because she’s in high demand by some of the greatest filmmakers of the modern era.  This past October she reunited with Luca Guadagnino for “Suspiria.”  At Cannes she’s celebrating the premiere of Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die” and either later this year or early next she’ll once again join a Wes Anderson ensemble for “The French Dispatch.”  And all this comes off the critically acclaimed Sundance drama “The Souvenir” and a pivotal role in a little movie you might have heard of, “Avengers: Endgame.”  In many ways, Swinton has become auteur cinema’s Meryl Streep meaning she keeps hitting one great performance out of the park again and again and again.

The selections for the 72nd Festival de Cannes were announced in Paris early Wednesday morning and, as expected, it promised a star-studded affair. New films from Pedro Almodovar, Xavier Dolan, Terrence Malick, Bong Joon-ho, Ira Sachs and Ken Loach, will premiere in competition. The out-of-competition selections include Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman” and two episodes of Nicolas Winding-Refn‘s upcoming series “Too Old To Die Young.”
