Sure, you have films like ‘John Wick 3’ and “Aladdin” doing good business, but for the most part, we’ve seen disappointing debut after disappointing debut. And this weekend was no different, as “Men in Black: International” and “Shaft” underperform.

The fourth film in the ‘Men in Black’ franchise, ‘International’ failed to re-energize the series, as it appears that not even the combined talents of Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, and Emma Thompson could get people to check it out.

It’s not unusual for the director to switch genres between films and the cast that he had signed on for his zombie film, eventually titled “The Dead Don’t Die,” was stellar.

Despite her claims of barely making it through the last 24 hours, you would have never known how tired Sevigny was. A fashion and indie film icon, Sevigny looks like she’s ready to sit down and take in a runway show at Paris Fashion Week.

Maybe this is because we’ve become so accustomed to some sort of Marvel film kicking the season off in a big way in late April/early May, or because May is dominated by Cannes coverage. Either way, June has turned into a weird halfway point between the start and end of the season, with July and August once again picking up in terms of quality and quantity.

Each time the American original tangles with a new form–particularly those that are experiencing a moment in the pop-cultural sun–he holds to the stylistic signatures that have defined his work since indie classic “Strange in Paradise.” With “The Dead Don’t Die”—the opening film of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, also in the running for the Palme d’Or—Jarmusch runs in a completely different direction and tackles the zombie film through a fourth-wall-breaking, bluntly comedic lens.

Murray, who has previously collaborated with director Jim Jarmusch on “Broken Flowers” and “The Limits of Control,” was on fire as he answered one question after another at the film’s official press conference on Wednesday.

Granted, for many of these films they exist only as a logline and one official image, but prestige horror is seemingly destined to make its mark on the usually sunny usually Croisette. Then again, rain is in the forecast.

There are a number of interesting trends this year at the French event, including a trio of new American filmmakers in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, semi-old school Hollywood star power (Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sylvester Stallone), a slight increase in female directors in competition (a big ol’ four of them), and, as always, filmmakers the festival simply can’t say no too (Pedro Almodóvar, Xavier Dolan, Ken Loach, the Dardennes, etc.).

That’s ok. This summer is stacked, as usual, and that does not even account for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival which will have plenty of arthouse blockbusters premieres and mainstream movies like the new Quentin Tarantino film. Yes, summer 2019 is jam-packed. There are all kinds of blockbusters, indies, arthouse films, horror movies—many of which we’ve already covered here— and more.

Or, in this case, 15 of them. The kids are out of school, with the late middle schoolers and high schoolers think they are “too cool” to take their younger sibling to see “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” and want to break away with their friends to see something that warrants engagement.

New films from Pedro Almodovar, Xavier Dolan, Terrence Malick, Bong Joon-ho, Ira Sachs and Ken Loach, will premiere in competition. The out-of-competition selections include Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman” and two episodes of Nicolas Winding-Refn‘s upcoming series “Too Old To Die Young.”

In the last couple of weeks, there’s been a ton of speculation about which films would show up, with names like Tarantino, Almodovar, and Bong Joon-ho being thrown around. But it appears that neither of those filmmakers will have the opening night slot. According to a new report from Variety, that distinction is going to go to Jim Jarmusch.

And around these parts, that means that it’s time to roll out the annual smorgasbord of year-end features, looking at the best, and sometimes worst, of the year in film and TV.
