What you hear is the deep sigh of frustration of Marvel fans everywhere as the realization of a year wait until the next ‘Avengers‘ installment sets in. Although the next tentpole Marvel film, “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” doesn’t hit theaters until later this summer, there’s plenty of blockbuster fare to strike a similar exciting chord revving up in May, along with plenty of films that filter in through different niches of independent filmmaking.

The most high falutin’ best of the year list always belongs to Cahiers du Cinema who, when they aren’t going hardcore arthouse, are making bonkers mainstream selections. True to form, they’ve lived up to their reputation in 2017.

David Lynch‘s “Twin Peaks: The Return” has topped the list, which will once again stoke the Film Twitter fire and debate over, What is cinema? It’s a boring conversation and argument, so I’ll leave that to the turtlenecks and clove cigarette smokers to figure out.

Organizers have revealed the bulk of their slate, and the films — with more than a few from those streaming services — that will join Opening Night flick “Last Flag Flying” from Richard Linklater, Closing Night picture “Wonder Wheel” from Woody Allen,” and Centerpiece Gala selection “Wonderstruck” from Todd Haynes.
