Kurosawa’s career has somewhat waned in recent years, but in the early 2000s, he was known to be one of the forerunners of the Japanese New Wave Horror movement.

After the very indie heavy soundtrack of “Whip It” last year, another Drew Barrymore comedy is on the way with another selection of hipster approved tunes.

For “Going The Distance,” the upcoming late summer rom-com starring Barrymore and Justin Long, a mixtape friendly selection of tracks will grace the soundtrack. Ex-Q And Not U outfit Georgie James stride into the majors with “Places;” The Strokes’ axe-slinger Albert Hammond Jr. contributes “In Transit” from his debut album Yours To Keep while soundtrack mainstay Cat Power struts with “Could We.” Helping to round things out are The Cure, Eels, The Replacements, Band Of Skulls, Passion Pit and more.

“I went away to see an old friend of mine/his sister came over/she was out of her mind” — Sonic Youth, “Schizophrenia“

Coming in at a crisp ninety-three minutes with not a single wasted shot or extraneous moment, Fabrice Gobert’s directorial debut “Lights Out” was a refreshing palate-cleanser late in the Cannes schedule, providing relief to the seemingly endless stream of Very Important Movies. With a score composed by Sonic Youth and a mystery that doubles as an insight to the tenuous and intangible qualities of those late sex-obsessed teenage years, “Lights Out” is a clever drama masquerading as a murder mystery.

As you’ve all probably heard by now there’s a pretty massive article on the late John Hughes (director/writer of ’80s classics like, “The Breakfast Club,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and many more) in the latest issue of Vanity Fair. We haven’t read it yet, but it’s by one of our favorite music/film writers David Kamp, so it’s a must-read for us this weekend.

The piece talks about a lot of unfinished or unproduced screenplays Hughes either wrote or never finished and one caught our eye via Slicing Up Eyeballs that was based on The Cure song, “Lovecats” that was introduced to the director via Molly Ringwald.

The USC Scripter Award, which honors both the original script and adapted screenplays based on existing work has announced this year’s nominees, as follows: “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” – Eric Roth
“Iron Man” (four writers, listed, ugh)
“The Reader” – David Hare
“Revolutionary Road” – Justin Haythe
“Slumdog Millionaire” – Simon Beaufoy
As AD notes, “The Scripter doesn’t often match up five for five at the Oscars but last year, the adapted screenplay nominees for the WGA matched the Scripter five for five.” [AwardsDaily]

The Cure will begin working on a career-spanning documentary that will showcase Robert Smith ever-expanding and prosperous waistline, plus the yearly increasing embarrassment of aging and still dressing like a 14-year-old emo kid. The documentary will come out in 2009 in tandem with the Cure’s 30th anniversary and Smith’s promised new fighting weight of 300lbs. [Billboard]

One of our favorite foreign directors, Bosnian/Serb filmmaker,”Emir Kusturica (“Underground,” “Black Cat, White Cat“) is making a documentary about once legendary, now bloated and coked-up disgraced Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona.
