After a year that changed our relationship with movie-going, it would seem that things are trying to inch back into a semblance of “normalcy.” Theaters are reopening, and as people continue to receive their vaccinations, more and more will be looking to enjoy films on the big screen – especially those like the musical “In The Heights” or broad comedies and terrifying horror films which thrive on audiences feeding off of each other’s energy.

So… I guess we’re back? Who would have guessed back in 2013, when “The Conjuring” first came out in theaters, that the horror film would kick off an entire cinematic universe? Since then, creator James Wan has expanded the original movie into three franchises, one spin-off film, and more projects on the way. The “Conjuring” franchises have since become even more lucrative than Wan’s “Saw” series and the second most profitable horror film series ever, behind only the “Godzilla” franchise.

Pandemic life may have been horror enough for most, and no, this isn’t some comment on Inauguration Day, but those of us who find comfort in giving ourselves the creeps have been in a bit of a drought. Last year saw the displacement of some massive upcoming titles, like “A Quiet Place Part II,” Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s “Candyman” sequel, and the next David Gordon Green “Halloween” installment, “Halloween Kills.” Those movies are all set to finally premiere this year, and they – along with a few other holdovers and some new features – are among our most anticipated horror films of 2021.
