Alright, the 2010 Oscar nominations are in and obviously “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” are going to go toe to toe at the ceremony with 9 nods a piece, and it’s made juicier by the fact that the two directors, James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow were once married. Be sure to expect a lot of Battle of the Sexes/Exes/Lovers crap from the lesser media (TV, bloggers who will engage in such nonsense, etc.).

There weren’t a myriad surprises this year, a lot of it was set in stone a long time ago, but it wouldn’t be the Oscars if there weren’t some curveballs thrown our way.

“Avatar” may be making things interesting for moviegoers, but the blue behemoth is boring film writers to tears. The last weekend in January marks the seventh time the James Cameron ode to the beauty of nature and the power of really expensive special effects has perched atop the box office rankings, bringing in another $30 million, a haul that most studios would be happy with for their film’s first week. But the real news here is that with a worldwide take of more than $2 billion total, “Avatar” surpassed the impressive, formerly record-holding haul of “Titanic,” and it should beat Cameron’s last film’s domestic gross of $600 million sometime this week, which is the last record to fall (not counting inflation adjustments.

So here’s how it works: if you give any sort of analysis into the numbers being put up by “Avatar,” boosters of the film will get sand in their vaginas and call you a jerk for even beginning to question the dominance of the second highest grossing film of all time. So what can you say about its sixth straight weekend of being the number one movie in America? You can’t point to the fact that its only real competition was “Sherlock Holmes” over Christmas weekend, you can’t talk about how inflated the 3D numbers are, you can’t talk about how the film has done consistent numbers despite never registering a weekend like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine“‘s $85 million first period or how it’s about to pass “The Dark Knight” despite opening with less than half of what the Batman film did in its opening frame, and you ESPECIALLY can’t discuss how the film is a mediocre adventure picture with little potential of capturing the audience’s fancy in the manner of even “Titanic,” with no memorable characters, dialogue, or genuine romance to tether its inexplicable appeal to.

James Cameron’s money train keeps on rolling — while “Avatar” took its first significant percentage drop of just under 30%, it’s still holding remarkably well — in fact, it’s now pipped “Titanic”‘s record for the best fourth weekend. At a total of $429 million, it’s now the 7th all time domestic grosser, and is now officially the second biggest grossing film of all time worldwide. Yeah, the premium on 3D tickets helps, but there’s no denying that everybody’s favorite dragon-rape movie (seriously, we were the only people who felt a little uncomfortable with that rodeo scene?) is a genuine phenomenon.

Step aside, Julia, Reese, and Meryl — Sandra Bullock is officially unstoppable. At some point over the weekend, her Jesus, race and football film, “The Blind Side” became the first female star driven film to take in $200 million at the box office, as reported by Variety. With the wild, word-of-mouth success of this film and last summer’s “The Proposal” she’s the Box Office Queen of Hollywood. ‘The Blind Side’ has garnered her noms from SAG, the Golden Globes and the Broadcast Film Critics, and people are starting to talk Oscar, maybe even for Best Picture too.

Well, you win some and you lose some. We had previously celebrated when Karen O’s “All Is Love” got an 11th hour addition to the Oscar shortlist for Best Song when Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” was – depending on who you ask – disqualified or retracted for consideration as it was not written specifically for “Hannah Montana: The Movie.”

Unfortunately, Carter Burwell won’t get his shot at Oscar this year, as the Academy has ruled that the overall soundtrack for “Where The Wild Things Are” is too heavily blended with Karen O’s pop tunes.

So… “Avatar.” You like it, you really really like it. After a solid opening weekend in 3D box office terms, the film dropped only 2.6% from last period’s intake, winning with a superspectacular $75 million, the best second weekend in history, and a ten day total of $212 mil. Hooray for megabudgeted anti-corporation big blockbusters made by big corporations! “Avatar” has connected big time, and with more holidays off and word of mouth spreading (“I don’t remember what it was about but… blue things!”), it’s got a shot at $300 million by next weekend and at least a $400 domestic take.

James Cameron may have mastered all sorts of new technology for “Avatar,” but the self-proclaimed “king of the world” still hasn’t harnessed the weather. Better get on that, Jimbo. “Avatar” did nice business domestically — $73 77 million over the weekend — but one wonders what heights it could have ascended to if it weren’t for the foot-deep blanket of snow that covered the East Coast. According to Variety, the eye-numbing pic boasts the second-highest December opening ever after “I Am Legend.” “Avatar” may have had cat people, epic battles, and 3D technology, but apparently it needed zombies and Will Smith to break that record.

If it wasn’t clear to anyone else, the holidays are prime time at the box office for family bonding/torture. As a result, three of the top five this weekend were family offerings, with Disney ruling the roost thanks to “The Princess And The Frog.” The latest in their line of princess films probably suffered from ruining the novelty of a black princess, by turning her into a frog for the majority of the film (progress!).

The holiday movie season is about to become very busy, so the first weekend of December was looking like a weak sister for awhile now. Still, the beat goes on for “The Blind Side,” which continued its improbable run by landing at #1 in its third week. The hooray-for-institutionalized-racism drama has been surging since a pretty good opening, but it probably owes its success to a wide-open marketplace and the diminishing returns of huge opener “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” “Blind Side” might stop short of $200 million if the legs drop out in coming weeks, but who knows?

Last weekend, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” grossed a little over $111 million more than “The Blind Side” over the three day weekend. During this holiday session, however, that gap was narrowed down to $2 million. Chalk this one up to the fickle nature of the “Twilight” fanbase, as well as the burgeoning return of the word-of-mouth hit that is “The Blind Side.” “New Moon” dropped 70% (which we sorta predicted) to just barely take the lead over the three day weekend, nabbing $66 million for the five day.

Hooray for everyone! Hollywood must love this weekend, because by the numbers, it looks like everyone wins. Thanks to “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” for getting the major front page headlines on the nation’s lesser newspapers, spotlighting just how much moviegoing is thriving in the face of terrorism, piracy and, what is it this week? Yes, swine flu, forgot about that. One of the most lucrative moviegoing weekends of all time was highlighted by the third highest opening ever for a single film.

There’s a little something for everyone opening wide this week — unless you actually like good movies, that is. But don’t fret, there are some very interesting options opening limited this week including new films from a couple of our favorite all-time directors. Whatever you fancy, this will be a huge weekend at the box office. With “New Moon” occupying all the brainpower of the country’s teenage girl population, maybe you’ll actually be able to sit through a movie without any incessant giggling and texting this weekend.

Oh, Will Smith, how goddamned predictable can you get? The Teflon box office draw, who realized with “Hancock” that his movies didn’t need to be middling when they could be out-and-out bad and people would still see them, is set to feed his desperate, needy onscreen hero complex once again. His Overbrook Entertainment shingle is teaming with Sony to produce “The American Can,” a movie about Hurricane Katrina.

Oh, is it about the dreadful crisis that faces families in the wake of the disasters?
