A24 has become a studio synonymous with originality and experimentation. And for the most part, with films like “Moonlight,” “The Lighthouse,” “Lady Bird,” and “Hereditary,” among many more, the mission statement has really worked out well. But now, A24 is presenting “The Beach,” which is probably the studio’s most experimental project yet.

As seen in the trailer for “The Beach,” the project is being described as an “infinity-looping experience,” where you follow one man on a beach doing everyday tasks.

You would think that a film from director Danny Boyle, writer John Hodge (based on the novel by Alex Garland), and star Leonardo DiCaprio is a sure-thing. However, back in 2000, the collaboration between those talented folks, titled “The Beach,” not only didn’t strike a chord with critics but is one of the worst reviewed projects in the careers of each of them (it currently holds a dismal 20% on Rotten Tomatoes).

The bust up between director Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor over “The Beach” is a pretty well known story at this point, but one that’s getting fresh airing with the release this weekend of “T2: Trainspotting” in the U.K., and one you’re likely to hear a few more times before the film lands stateside. But the short version goes like his: after making three movies together, Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor were going to reunite for “The Beach.” However, when Boyle decided to go with fast-rising Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role instead (who had major post-“Titanic” heat and could get the movie up-and-running with a healthy budget), McGregor didn’t take it well, the pair didn’t speak for years.
