Following up on last week’s “District 9” and “Ponyo,” film lovers across the country have even more reasons to celebrate as one of the most anticipated releases of the year opens at multiplexes nationwide. Late summer has never been so good.

In Wide Release: Opening on what has to be a record (for Tarantino) 3000+ screens, “Inglourious Basterds” has been on everyone’s radar for years now. You’ve probably read the script, watched each little bit of media on the web, analyzed every ridiculous interview, and maybe even purchased the souvenir mug.

Russell Crowe Teams With Paul Haggis In ‘The Next Three Days,’ Ron Howard To Adapt Another Ludlum Espionage Thriller, Not So Fast With ‘Batman 3’ Talk

Russell Crowe will team up with Paul Haggis in the upcoming adaptation (translation: remake?) of 2008 French film “Pour Elle.” Titled “The Next Three Days,” the film will find Crowe as a teacher whose wife is arrested and convicted of a murder she says she did not commit. He comes up with a desperate plan to free her. Production will begin in late September with a script written by Haggis for Lionsgate that explores deeper themes of faith and belief.

Controversial German Film ‘Baader-Meinhof Complex’ Finally Receiving U.S. Release In August

Some of you may remember the German film, “Der Baader Meinhof Komplex” by Uli Edel; a big-budgeted blockbuster (starring many notable German stars) about the early origins of the Red Army Faction, West Germany’s most violent and prominent militant left-wing anti-capitalist group that began in the late 1960s.

The film almost immediately lost all good will in cinema communities around the globe when the producers of the film — in a move that reeked of Hollywood blockbuster overestimation and self-importance — had the gall to make reporters sign waivers that said if they wrote about or reviewed the film before a certain time they would be sued into oblivion.

Will Arnett recently talked about the “Arrested Development” movie but don’t expect to be enlightened with anything we didn’t know already. In fact he’s finally said aloud what we’ve all already been thinking. “God, I’ve never known a movie whose every step of development has been as closely followed. This movie’s gonna be such a disaster,” he laughed. [MTV]

Former “The Flash” helmer Shawn Levy (“Night At The Museum,””Cheaper By The Dozen”) admits that he was not the right man for the job: “It’s a thing I’d love to try my hand at, but as I look at the work of guys like [Jon] Favreau, [Christopher] Nolan and Zack Snyder, it occurs to me that there are guys who are genuinely naturals at those sort of films.

It seems like every year the the foreign-language committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences piss us all off with some major snub. Despite winning the Palmed’Or in 2007, Cristian Mungiu’s amazing Romanian abortion drama, “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” was snubbed by the AMPAS Oscar Foreign shortlist as was the brilliant animated French film, “Persepolis” (in 2007 it was Carlos Reygadas’ “Silent Light” and Fatih Akin’s “Edge of Heaven” that were criminally overlooked).

Cut-Off Day Was Yesterday, Rounding Up This Years Best Foreign Language Film Submissions

Wednesday saw the foreign language film selectors taking off their thinking caps and resting on the hope that their official submissions for Best Foreign Language Film appeal to the temperamental Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Cinematical notes that this year 51 countries submitted what they consider their finest products, from the usuals such as Italy and France, and others like Jordan who submitted a film, “Captain Abu Raed,” for the first time ever.

Much-Hyped German Film, ‘Baader Meinhof Complex’ Fails To Ignite Box-Office In Native Deutschland

The much-hyped German film, “The Baader Meinhof Complex” failed to light up the box-office in its native home. The film which has been picked by Germany as its official Foreign Oscar representation failed to beat “Wall-E” which just opened in Deutschland. Produced by Bernd Eichinger, the film’s disappointing opening couldn’t even match the producers last films’ openings; arthouse pics like “Downfall,” and “Perfume — The Story of a Murderer.” ‘Baader Meinhof’ met controversy earlier this year when it threatened Germany reporters and journalists with a 100, 000 Euro fine if they wrote about the film before its September 25 German release.

So much for “A Woman In Berlin,” a German film we saw at the Toronto Film Fest that we thought might have a shot at Foreign Oscar gold. Nope! Germany has selected it’s official Oscar entry and don’t look for some trenchant drama like “The Lives Of Others” (which won the Best Foreign Oscar for Deutschland in 2007), they’ve chosen, “Der Baader Meinhof Komplex,” a shoot-’em up flick that’s a potential blockbuster (at least for Germany).
