The Costume Designers Guild handed out their 2019 awards on Tuesday night and they recognized two of the major frontrunners for the Costume Design Oscar.  Excellence in Period Film went to Sandy Powell and “The Favourite” and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy went to Ruth E. Carter for “Black Panther.”  Mary E. Vogt took the Contemporary Film honor for “Crazy Rich Asians,” but the film didn’t earn an Academy Award nomination.

The Producers Guild of America held the 30th annual PGA Awards on Saturday night and it allowed the influential guild to finally have their say in the Oscars race.  And who did the PGA anoint as the Best Film of the Year?  Oh, just “Green Book.”

Since the PGA have gone to 10 nominees in 2010, they have only incorrectly picked the Best Picture winner twice, in 2016 with “The Big Short” and 2017 with “La La Land.”  This century the PGA and AMPAS have lined up 12 out of 18 times so far.

If you care, the 2019 Critics Choice Awards were handed out tonight. The annual event where the venerable Broadcast Film Critics Association dolled out their honors in order to keep getting those screeners every year and plush interview slots.  And, thankfully for broadcast network the CW, they nominated enough stars in each category that at least some big names showed up.

Oh, and did you know they tell some nominees the night before they haven’t won so they don’t have to show up if they don’t want to?

The members of the Screen Actors Guild are a quirky bunch.  The entire SAG-AFTRA organization has a pool of 129,000 or so members that is widdled down to 2,500 or so volunteers who vote for the annual SAG Awards as the “nominating committee.”  Sometimes they come to screenings, sometimes they don’t.  Sometimes they watch screeners, sometimes they don’t.  What we do know is they love Netflix.  Really.  In fact, it should be a constant theme when considering who will and who won’t be nominated for SAG honors this year.

The American Film Institute announced their year-end top 10 lists this year and the only real surprise is the continued love for “First Reformed.” Paul Schrader’s drama joined “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “Eighth Grade,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “A Quiet Place” and “A Star is Born” on the top 10 list of AFI Movies of the Year.

On the television side, five new shows made the cut including “Barry,” “Pose,” “Succession,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and “The Kominsky Method.”

“Roma” was ineligible for the film list because of its foreign financing and creative team, but was honored with a special award by the committee.

The Television Academy handed out its first set of Creative Arts Emmy Awards for 2018 on Saturday night and history was made. For the first time, African-Americans won every Guest Actor Emmy. Ron Cephas Jones took Guest Actor in a Drama Series for “This Is Us” (he won Supporting Actor last year), Katt Williams won Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for “Atlanta,” Tiffany Haddish won Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for hosting “Saturday Night Live” and Samira Wiley was honored in the Guest Actress in a Drama Series category for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

While the cast boasts heavyweights Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez, reviews (including ours) are paying special attention to Darren Criss‘ performance as serial killer  Andrew Cunanan.

There must be a good reason to alter a story’s chronology, be it to convey a character’s subjective perception of events (“Memento”), to make a reveal at the most opportune moment (“The Usual Suspects”), or simply because you are Quentin Tarantino (“Pulp Fiction”).

“The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” brings together a heckuva lead quartet — Edgar Ramirez, Darren Criss, Ricky Martin (yes, the singer) and Penelope Cruz — for the story of Andrew Phillip Cunanan, an American serial killer who murdered at least five people, including fashion designer Gianni Versace on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion, during a three-month period in 1997.

It was recently announced that “Katrina: American Crime Story,” which was due to air next year, had a problem with filming and isn’t expected to begin until early 2018. That’s a bummer, but the good news is that “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” will be coming in its place, and at least based on the images, it looks like it’s going to be some entertainingly lurid and glamorous fare.
