Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. It simply can’t be helped, but as we consider the nominees for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards, it must be acknowledged that the overall Comedy Series field is embarrassingly weak. Sure, there are great programs that will be lauded by the Television Academy including “Ted Lasso,” “The Flight Attendant” and “Hacks. Unfortunately, when you start drilling down to previously expanded acting categories, well, let’s just say there may be some unprompted raised eyebrows when the nominees are finally revealed next week.

The Producers Guild of America revealed their 2020 PGA Awards nominations in both film and television setting up races for both the Oscars and Emmys over the next eight months. On the film side, “Parasite,” “1917,” “Ford v. Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story” and “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” made the cut. Television nominees for Drama Series included “Watchmen,” “Big Little Lies,” “The Crown,” “Succession” and “Game of Thrones.”

The Comedy Series nominees lined up with most of last year’s Emmy category: “Fleabag,” “Veep,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs.

We’re still stunned that “The Masked Singer” wasn’t the new nominee (and Emmy broadcaster FOX can’t be thrilled it didn’t make the cut), but we also didn’t expect last year’s winner, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” to earn even more nominations than the year prior. In fact, the “Drag Race” franchise rang up a record 14 nominations, up from 12 the year prior. “The Voice” was second with just seven, down from nine last year.

There were zero surprises with the nominees in this category. Back in March we predicted the same five nominees from 2017 would return in 2018 and that’s exactly what happened.  Sadly, we’re also convinced despite a record 12 nominations, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will once again lose to “The Voice” (which earned 10 nods).  The NBC staple simply has too much star power and, most importantly, ratings behind it.  Then again, anything is Rupossible.

Listen, it’s either going to be “Drag Race” or “The Voice.” NBC’s musical competition show has won three out of the past four years (“Amazing Race” took the other year), so it’s a formidable contender, but RuPaul and “Drag Race” are riding a wave of mainstream popularity the show has never seen. RuPaul also won the Host Emmy last year and is nominated once again.  Could “Drag Race” be the fan favorite nominee like “Project Runway” that never actually wins?
