The concept is wonderfully clever: Every episode uses a different genre to dig deeper into a murder investigation that largely takes place in a single setting. The first season detailed the death of an abrasive pop star played by Dave Franco, likely killed by someone at the afterparty for his high school reunion, someone who might have hated him for years.

The cause has been variously attributed to the rise of streamers, shifting cultural attitudes, and Hollywood’s abandonment of mid-budget films. But despite the genre’s endangered status at the movies, comedy hasn’t exactly disappeared; it has simply relocated. Action-oriented hybrids like “The Suicide Squad” and “Red Notice” are virtually studio comedies in disguise. Meanwhile, plot-driven TV mystery series like HBO’s “Search Party” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” rely on comedic writing and performances to power their high-concept premises.

Now, many would say that they prefer shows that have the time to explore the story, the characters, and the themes throughout a season over a movie.

Many shows highlight the strength of television, and streaming services have made it a competitive market. This year has already seen “The Last of Us,” “Pokerface,” “Shrinking,” and “Daisy Jones and The Six,” on top of the new seasons of shows like “Succession,” “The Marvelous Ms.

What fun! Except she’s Tiffany Haddish, and she suffers fools the way giraffes suffer pesky insects—with a huff and a slap. “The Afterparty,” the new Apple TV+ series from Chris Miller, is stocked with fools, so Haddish has her work cut out for her, which means we have the pleasure of watching her raise eyebrows at an ensemble comprising Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Chao, Ike Barinholtz, John Early, Dave Franco, Tiya Sircar, and Genevieve Angelson as self-centered neurotics each suspected of murder most foul.

From shows such as the much-talked-about “Yellowjackets” readying itself for its final two episodes of Season 1 to the long-awaited return of HBO’s “Euphoria,” there’s a little something for everyone being released in January. What may have in the past been a wasteland of a month for new releases, the shear amount of content this year means buzzier shows are getting the release in dead of winter.

And growing immensely. With the advent of the streaming age and then the super-charged streaming age of the last two/three years. In trying to catch up to Netflix, Disney+ launched November 2019, AppleTV+ and HBO Max weren’t far behind and now pretty much every company in movies and television has its own streaming network.

Follow the Netflix model and/or the model that all up-and-comers take: spend a lot of money and hire popular creators, throw more money at them to get big casts and watch the critics flock to your service because they’ll feel obligated to cover the content. That’s basically what everyone is doing and what Apple TV+ has done with “The Afterparty”—hiring Phil Lord and Christoper Miller (the ‘Spiderverse’ and ‘Jump Street’ franchises) to create something that looks a little “Knives Out”-inspired.

This time, we’re talking television and yes, there’s a lot of TV to deal with. Frankly, however, with the explosion of streaming, the second age of PeakTV, now known as the Streaming Age, we’re somewhat surprised this list isn’t over 100 picks long. Disney+ and Apple TV+ may have launched in late 2019, but 2020 really brought us the full breadth of both those streaming services wares.

Thanks to films like “The LEGO Movie,” the ‘21 Jump Street’ franchise, and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” these filmmakers have the benefit of the doubt no matter what the project is. However, with the upcoming series, “The Afterparty,” it appears that there’s very little to doubt, as the comedy is stacked with some incredible actors.

After launching just over eight months ago, the service has been making a notable effort to expand and establish their catalog of original television programming. In a recent, reportedly competitive situation, Apple TV+ has now procured yet another high-profile series from Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, titled “The Afterparty.”
