Given the loud noise “Live By Night” made when it tanked at the box office late last year, you might’ve forgotten that Ben Affleck had a considerable hit with the dumb but pretty fun, “The Accountant.” The R-rated, “John Wick“-esque action thriller did an impressive $86 million domestic, part of the film’s $155 million worldwide haul, which is not too shabby for a movie that cost $44 million.

The reviews weren’t great, but that didn’t really matter, because audiences clearly wanted to see Ben Affleck crunch some numbers, but more importantly, get into action. And the actor calculated a number one opening this weekend with “The Accountant.”

Earning $24.7 million, the opening is in line with 2010’s “The Town,” which wound up with $92 million domestic and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Jeremy Renner‘s performance.

The story of an autistic accountant who earns a living as a Robin Hood-ish financial advisor by day and a highly trained lethal assassin by night, Gavin O’Connor’s action saga operates from an absurd premise and yet is so gravely earnest — and so oblivious to its own silliness — that it comes across as a big-budget work of unintentional comedy.
