First, Juliette Binoche called him a “control freak” while recalling working with the filmmaker on “Caché.” “I thought, ‘He doesn’t give a shit about what I’m doing.’ So I said that to him; I said, did you see?

Harmony Korine has never made “normal” films. Even his most straightforward feature, probably 2019’s “The Beach Bum,” is pretty subversive by traditional standards. But then you look at things like “Gummo,” “Spring Breakers,” and “Trash Humpers,” and you realize Korine just clearly doesn’t have any interest in making anything the general public would embrace. So, it makes sense that his new film, “AGGRO DR1FT,” is shot 100% in infrared and features all the subversion you would expect.

Two significant highlights anchor November: a six-film Jackie Chan box-set, “Jackie Chan: Emergence Of A Superstar,” and Martin Scorsese’s classic low-level gangster film “Mean Streets.”

“Mean Streets” needs little introduction. While it’s not Marty or Robert De Niro’s first film, it’s a seminal early work from both that eventually launched them into the pantheon of incredible American filmmakers and collaborators.

Literally, the filmmaker works on his own timetable and pretty much does whatever he wants, including taking a 20-year hiatus from filmmaking between 1978’s “Day of Heaven” (which is re-joining the Criterion Collection in a new edition announced today) and 1998’s “The Thin Red Line.

This, largely, has to do with the fact that Malick is reluctant to do any sort of press and doesn’t make massive Hollywood blockbusters. He releases a new film on his own schedule and only makes movies about subjects he finds interesting enough to work on.

Since then, outside of a re-release a year or so later, it’s been hard to find a way to enjoy Malick’s feature at your leisure. Well, that is until MUBI stepped up to land the exclusive streaming rights to the film and is set to release it later this month.

And over the weekend, he began trending after an interview with “Eternals” filmmaker Chloe Zhao was released, where the filmmaker not only credits Snyder for influencing her film, but she also compares his “Man of Steel” to the work of legendary filmmaker, Terrence Malick.

When speaking to the French outlet, Pure Break, Zhao was asked if there was any inspiration from Superman comics that went into her development of the Eternals hero, Ikaris.

But Malick, like any other filmmaker, has a long list of unproduced projects, one of which involved a score written by James Newton Howard titled “Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners.”

READ MORE: Mark Rylance Jokes He Did “90 Minute Takes” On Terrence Malick’s ‘Last Planet’ Which Now Has A Composer

The news comes from One Big Soul, the Malick Facebook fan site, which reports that the previous title of “The Last Planet” was actually a working title, and the actual title of the film is “The Way of the Wind.” This title is likely a reference to the Biblical passage Ecclesiastes 11:5, “As thou knowest not what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child; even so thou knowest not the work of God who doeth all.” This is a similar lesson to the one of Job which Malick already portrayed in “The Tree of Life,” which would make sense given the subject matter in “The Way of the Wind.”

As we already knew, Malick’s next film will be a biblical epic, telling the story of the life of Jesus Christ through a series of parables.

Well, not much publicly anyhow. As usual, most of it is under the radar, but a new sign suggests it’s entering the post-production stages and perhaps inching towards completion (though with Malick, you never know).

Film Soundtrack Reporter says Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou has written the original score for the upcoming drama. She is known for writing the score to Theodoros Angelopoulos’ 1995 Grand Jury Prize Cannes winner “Ulysses’ Gaze” and some of her existing music was used in both “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Malick’s own “Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey” (the longer version with Cate Blanchett narration that never came out theatrically beyond film festivals).

The runner-up? One of 2011’s best movies, Lars von Trier‘s visceral exploration of depression in “Melancholia.” Turns out that von Trier’s film was actually the jury’s favorite, until the Danish director gave a press conference with an anti-Semitic joke that made him lose the award.

For a certain contingent of film fans (those that write for and read this site, for example), the release of a new Terrence Malick film is almost like a holiday. Sure, they’re not always great, but every Malick film is like a peek into the psyche of one of the best filmmakers of all time. And therefore, it’s an event. Plus, like any good event, the release of a new film doesn’t happen all the time, so each still feels special.

We don’t spend a lot of time going back and looking at, say, Colin Trevorrow‘s “The Book of Henry” and discussing the actors who auditioned for various roles. Revisiting casting decisions is only fun when the movies themselves stand up on their own, and their choices did not damage the actors’ careers. And since both the actor and the director are beloved by all, we can learn more about Edward Norton‘s decision to pass on Terrence Malick‘s “The Thin Red Line” without tarnishing either person’s legacy.

Sadly, his career in rap was cut short after his tragic passing from a drug overdose. And for many watching the upcoming film “Everybody’s Everything,” they probably aren’t as familiar with the music of Peep but will no doubt be moved by the tragic story of Gustav Ahr.
