Diminishing returns is a term used in business quite a bit. It’s the idea that eventually, over time, a product just doesn’t perform as it did previously. Paramount/Skydance’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” was originally planned to help revive the stale time-traveling cyberpunk string of movies with the hopes that the new installment, that brought back both original stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, would end the Connor Family saga allowing for films to pivot towards other characters in two other potential follow-ups. However, those trilogy plans were paused when “Dark Fate” only managed to earn $261 million globally with a hefty production budget of $185 million, which combined with marketing costs would suggest the film wasn’t able to turn a profit. 

During Collider’s “Directors On Directing” panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, director Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) briefly opened up about his feelings (via Deadline) on the “Terminator” franchise after trying his hand at reviving it with pal James Cameron.

“Terminator: Dark Fate” was promoted as the return of Sarah Connor to the franchise after her last appearance in 1991’s “T2: Judgment Day.” However, if you saw the film, you know that Sarah Connor wasn’t the only returning character to the series. John Connor, played by a CGI-enhanced Edward Furlong also showed up, although very briefly. And in a new interview, he said that the cameo in the new film isn’t how he would have liked to return.

In “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” there’s this dream that haunts Sarah Connor daily, with images of a huge nuclear bomb going off in a city and the population turning to ash in the blast. It’s a peek at what Judgment Day might look like, and how quickly the world, as we know it, can cease to exist. In 2019, that cataclysmic bomb went off in the ‘Terminator’ franchise, and its name is ‘Dark Fate.’

After a box office debut weekend that not only was softer than expected, but actually worse than anyone would have predicted, “Terminator: Dark Fate” might have done what the three previous sequels weren’t able to — terminate the James Cameron franchise.
