PASADENA – Sadly, the 2020 edition of the Telluride Film Festival was canceled in July, but a little slice of the annual cinephile retreat was brought back to life Friday night at the iconic Rose Bowl. The festival and Searchlight Pictures partnered for a drive-in screening of Chloe Zhao‘s acclaimed drama “Nomadland” which premiered earlier in the day at Venice and also screened virtually at the Toronto Film Festival. And no one seemed more enthusiastic about the event that star Frances McDormand who jumped up and down before the post-screening Q&A.

Without bringing specific political issues into consideration, it’s clear that there is a huge difference between the presidencies of Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Anyone with eyes can see that. Unlike many of its fall film festival brethren, this year’s Telluride Film Festival was forced to cancel instead of hosting an in-person and/or digital event. Unfortunately, unlike Venice, TIFF, and others, Telluride finds itself in the unlucky position of happening in the United States, where COVID-19 is still a major issue and continues to spike all across the country. But like this year’s Cannes and some of the other canceled fests, Telluride went ahead and revealed which films would have been showcased at the 2020 event.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left the 2020 film festival schedule in shambles. Basically every festival from March until now has been either canceled or drastically altered with digital screenings. And though the festivals that begin this fall are in a better position than earlier events, with limited physical screenings and possible red carpets, it appears the organizations behind them are committed to working together instead of being competitors, for the sake of the industry.

In an open letter signed by leaders at the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and Telluride Film Festival, the leaders at each event have decided that the best way to help the industry recover from the pandemic is to collaborate and drop the competitive nature of the events.

Despite growing concerns about the global pandemic, an industry that’s still in lockdown, and festivals being canceled left and right, the 2020 edition of the Telluride Film Festival will still go on as planned over Labor Day weekend.

In a press release, festival organizers confirmed that the 47th edition of the festival will happen as planned, only it will an additional day added for safety reasons to allow more space between and within screenings.
