This morning we spoke to Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs, co-authors of the documentary on Maurice Sendak, “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak,” which is out today via Oscilloscope Laboratories (the new DVD and highly recommended Blu-ray edition of Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things” feature is also complete with that bizarre new short film produced by Jonze and also based on another Sendak work). As we noted last year, when the documentary aired on HBO, “Tell Them Anything You Want” is a perfect companion piece to “Where The Wild Things Are” and much like the author himself, it is an intimate, melancholy and very candid look at his life.

Spike Jonze’s ‘Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak’ Arrives On DVD Mar. 2

If you’re a Spike Jonze fan, better start saving some money or looking through couch cushions for change, because March just might break the bank.

As we reported awhile back, Oscilloscope Laboratories has picked up “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak,” the Jonze and Lance Bangs’ documentary that aired on HBO last fall. They will be releasing the forty-minute doc on DVD March 2nd, the same day as the DVD/BluRay release of “Where The Wild Things Are.” “Tell Them Anything”, which we called bracingly “honest and melancholy” in our review, while acting as a tribute to the author and featuring the likes of James Gandolfini, Meryl Streep, Catherine Keener and Tony Kushner, is also a frank and almost brutally naked portrait of Sendak, told by the man himself.

Adam Yauch’s Oscillioscope Pictures To Release Spike Jonze’s Maurice Sendak Doc On DVD Next Year

OK, it didn’t make our Best Documentaries of the Decade — though we probably should have made an honorable mention for it — but Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs co-directed’ film about “Where The Wild Things Are” creator, Maurice Sendak, titled, “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak,” is a beautiful, spare and raw piece of work. We called it a melancholy and perfect companion piece to Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are” live-action adaptation just before it aired on HBO earlier this fall.

‘Tell Them Anything You Want’: An Apt Companion Piece To ‘Wild Things’ & Just As Honest And Melancholy

“Tell Them Anything You Want,” the Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs-directed documentary on “Where The Wild Things Are” author Maurice Sendak (which has been shortlisted for the Oscar doc shorts category) is a perfect extension of ‘Wild Things’ the feature length film (which we saw and will review, but yes, you’ll be happy to know it’s wonderful).

Or rather, “Where The Wild Things Are,” the Spike Jonze-directed adaptation of the Sendak book is a great extension of the author’s spirit and personality and therefore the documentary that lays it all bare to see, warts and all.

Spike Jonze’s ‘Tell Them Anything You Want’ Doc About Maurice Sendak Shortlisted For Short Oscar Docs Category

We’ve already told you all about “Tell Them Anything You Want,” the Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs-directed documentary on “Where The Wild Things Are” author Maurice Sendak.

Well, the Academy Awards have given out their shortlist for the Best Documentary short category and have come up with eight films chosen by the documentary branch committee. Three-to-five films will make the final cut, but Jonze and Bangs doc has made the first round. It’s not an official nomination, but congrats to them nonetheless.

Remember that Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs-directed documentary on “Where The Wild Things Are” author Maurice Sendak we told you about last week?

Titled “Tell Them Anything You Want,” the doc airs October 14 on HBO and the New York Times has a clip that’s almost 3-minutes long from the show called “You Make My Heart Sing.” Yes, someone is clearly trying to make us weep.

Yes, there is plaintive Erik Satie music in the doc, deal with it.
