Since “Avengers: Endgame,” it’s clear there would be a “changing of the guard” in the MCU, with new heroes replacing the Avengers whose arcs culminated in that film. In fact, half of the original Avengers are gone at this point, with only Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye remaining (and Clint Barton is more or less retired). Still, at this point in Phase 4, no new heroes have stepped up to take over the empty spaces Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow left behind.

Marvel’s “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law” debuted this week on Disney+ and introduced Tatiana Maslany into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Jennifer Walters, aka, She-Hulk, the lawyer cousin of Bruce Banner. Well, this isn’t the first time Maslany has been in the mix for a comic book role. 

During her latest appearance on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast, the Canadian actress revealed she had previously tangled with other potential Marvel Comics roles and highlighted a rejection to play the female lead of Tom Hardy’s solo “Venom” movie, Anne Weying, the lawyer ex-girlfriend of Eddie Brock.

This morning, the subject was broached with the star and creators of an upcoming Marvel series whose VFX may have been unfairly criticized, “She-Hulk,” during a virtual Q&A with the Television Critics Association.

There are several reasons why HBO‘s gorgeously well-made, expansively imagined and deeply immersive new “Perry Mason” has critics casting around for synonyms of “timely.” Its twisted tale of gruesome and occasionally graphic baby-murder (the show’s dead-body modelmakers deserve some sort of award for grotesque, gross-out detail) touches on institutional corruption and police brutality, on racism and religious hypocrisy, on the exploitation of the marginalized, the stigmatization of homosexuality and the subjugation of women.

TELLURIDE – There have been few films in recent memory that flip a switch like Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer” does. Honestly, there are moments during the first half of this dramatic thriller where the clunky direction threatens to unravel the film; where scenes are not as sharp as they should be; where you wonder if Kusama could have filmed the proceedings in a more visually compelling manner. And then, out of nowhere, “Destroyer” just completely upends itself in a manner which is, in all seriousness, sort of amazing.
