Scott Z. Burns To Write & Direct A Musical Series For AMC Titled ‘National Anthem’

Recently, Scott Z. Burns (“The Report“) has made headlines due to the unfortunate coincidences between his script for 2011’s “Contagion” and the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. However, we’re pleased to report that Burns has a new project he’s working on that is about as far away from global health crises that you can get—a new musical series, “National Anthem.”

According to Deadline, Burns has teamed up with “Breaking Bad” producer Mark Johnson and AMC to develop a new musical dramedy titled “National Anthem.” Burns will write and direct the series that tells the story of “a middle-class midwestern family tumbling down the ladder of American society; periodically bursting into song as they struggle to catch themselves.”

You can’t have a musical without music, and providing the sounds of “National Anthem” are T Bone Burnett (“Crazy Heart”) and The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn.

While doing the press rounds for “Nanny McPhee Returns” Maggie Gyllenhaal — who we had no idea was even in that film — has revealed that she is set to join her husband Peter Sarsgaard in the gestating biopic of bluegrass legend Bill Monroe.

“Bill Monroe, who invented bluegrass music had a kind of Sid and Nancy style affair with this woman Bessie Lee Mauldin throughout his life and T-Bone Burnett’s going to do the music and Callie Khouri who wrote ‘Thelma & Louise’ wrote the script so we’re going to do that together,” she said.

‘Crazy Heart’ Helmer Scott Cooper May Direct Brad Pitt In ‘The Hatfields and The McCoys’

As it turns out, sometimes press junkets can be useful for more than rumors about “Alien” prequels and the next “Iron Man” movie. Jeff Wells was at the roundtables for the hotly-tipped Toronto hit “Get Low,” — which is finally set to hit theaters at the end of July– and Robert Duvall gave some info on another project that he’s involved with that, if it comes together, could be incredibly exciting.

The veteran actor is apparently set to appear in “The Hatfields and The McCoys,” a retelling of the legendary 19th century family feud, which has been written by Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”), and has “Crazy Heart” director Scott Cooper attached to helm at Warner Brothers.

‘Crazy Heart’ Soundtrack Mixes Cast Performances With Classic Cuts

Fox Searchlight’s last minute entry into the Oscar race, “Crazy Heart,” has been building quite a bit of steam. Jeff Bridges has been earning accolades for his turn as the grizzled, down-on-his-luck singer while T. Bone Burnett has been getting nods for his score, and Ryan Bingham is pretty much a lock for a Best Song nomination for “The Weary Kind.” While the film has been in limited release since mid-December, starting January 15th, Fox Searchlight will be considerably expanding the film’s playdates in the run-up to the Golden Globes (where Bridges and Bingham are nominated) and Oscars.

Bingham knows something about life on the road, having released two albums on Lost Highway with his band, The Dead Horses, and touring constantly.

Fox Searchlight Picks Up Country Music Film, ‘Crazy Heart’

Fox Searchlight has picked up “Crazy Heart,” Scott Cooper’s directorial debut which follows the story of an aging country singer (Jeff Bridges) who finds inspiration through his relationship with a reporter (Maggie Gyllenhaal) while dealing with the rise of his protege (Colin Farrell) and his own mentor (Robert Duvall).

We wrote about this one in one of our potentially anticipated 2009 pieces, but mostly because the cast is decent and T. Bone Burnett, is writing original music for the film, while Jeff Bridges (playing the musician) will be performing original songs.

T-Bone Burnett Composing Score For CMT’s Country Music Drama ‘Crazy Heart’

Country Music Telvision is getting into the TV movie business. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jeff Bridges and Robert Duvall will all star in the country music drama, “Crazy Heart.” T Bone Burnett, the composer and producer who made a splash at the Grammys in 2001 with the music composed for “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” will be writing the film’s original music and soundtrack.

The plot focuse on an unlucky and downtrodden, alcoholic country music singer (Bridges) who attempts to get his life and career back on track with the help and love of a female reporter (Gyllenhaal).
