A new report has revealed that we’ll be getting a “Call Me By Your Name” reunion with a new horror film from Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. The outlet also states that young actors Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell are currently in talks to take leading roles in the film “Bones & All,” described as a “horror-love story.”

The project is said to be up for bid and has multiple suitors are interested in landing the movie.

Scores and soundtracks are different beasts; one original musical written for a film that gives it its emotional shape—often the secret MVP of a movie—and the other more of a mixtape, but when well-curated and used next to picture, can be just as deadly and help craft what we know as the visual and aural transcendence that’s known as cinema when it’s at its best.

And then there’s the notion of resonance and what really lasts and is released too late (Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” is phenomenal, for example, but it’s not even released yet, and it’s just going to have to sit this one out).

The Recording Academy announed the 2020 Grammy Nominations on Wednesday morning and history was made. Lizzo led all nominees with eight, but both she Billie Eilish landed nods in the top four categories: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Best New Artist. They become the first two artists to ever pull that unique feat off.

The 2010s felt like a banner decade for the horror genre. It’s difficult to say that definitively as time is the only thing that can really make that distinction, but as the decade comes to a close, it feels like one that is going to be held up as a “golden era.”

It’s easy to understand why. After a decade filled with remakes, cheap, careless gunk from the likes of Dark Castle and Platinum Dunes, and the “torture porn” movement that metastasized from taking the extreme violence out of the “French New Extremity” (at least in mainstream horror), audiences were yearning for something more adventurous, and filmmakers were more than happy to oblige.

There’s no denying the fact that Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria” remake failed to spark much interest when it hit theaters (and was quickly removed) last fall. Personally, this was a complete shame, as the theater experience of his “Suspiria” was incredible and the film proudly sits amongst my favorites of 2018. However, regular film fans just didn’t seem to feel the same way, if box office receipts and mixed reviews are any indication.

The 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out in a ceremony in Santa Monica this afternoon hosted by Aubrey Plaza.  Annapurna Films’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” ruled the afternoon taking three awards including Best Film, Best Director (Barry Jenkins) and Best Supporting Actress (Regina King).  For the most part, however, Film Independent voters spread the love.

2018 saw the passing of a cinematography legend in Robby Müller, a regular collaborator of Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, who with his work on “Paris, Texas,” “Down By Law,” “Dead Man” and Lars von Trier’s “Breaking the Waves” was responsible, perhaps more than anyone, for defining and expanding the aesthetics of the 1980s and 1990s arthouse. It is a sad note in a year that has been otherwise a banner year for the craft he perfected and elevated, and so as our small tribute, we dedicate our list of the Best Cinematography of 2018 to him.

Unfortunately, Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria” didn’t have the major box office run that Amazon (and those folks involved) probably hoped for. After an impressive limited run, the film just seemed to never find it’s target audience. But honestly, who is the target audience for a horror film that’s over two-and-a-half hours long that features a political subplot and lots of dancing?

Trailer watching online has become something of a celebrity gossip sport. Will the ‘Avengers 4’ trailer arrive on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday? Oops, it’s changed, sorry, it’s not arriving til Monday. First the trailer usurped the movie itself, and now the date of the trailer has usurped the trailer itself, which is of course just a commercial trying to convince you to see a movie which in some case is a piece of art and other times is a commercial for a larger film, bigger universe or next installment of what the studio really wants you to see.

Movie marketing can be a weird thing to celebrate, no doubt. Posters, trailer and all kinds of promotional materials are selling tools explicitly designed to captivate (dupe?) the broadest, biggest audiences into attending your movie. These materials are created to attract the most mouth-breathing-friendly flies which usually means, big, dumb, loud and in the case of many posters, a healthy dose of criminal Photoshop abuse. Sometimes that means an overwrought collage-diarrhea on a superhero poster where it appears that one character is inevitably flatulating out an explosion, or the designer is just visually impaired, and sometimes it’s just the most egregious concept of all time.

Children’s movies are critic-proof, that much is obvious. And showing just how much kids don’t care about what the critical reaction is to an animated film, “The Grinch” easily dominated it’s debut weekend, with a massive showing at the box office.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s remake of the classic Christmas tale, “The Grinch,” pulled in an estimated $66 million this weekend to debut atop the box office. This type of debut is only mildly surprising when you consider the Rotten Tomatoes average for the film currently sits at 55%.
