Eight of them will make it, but at this point, we’d only bet on one of them, “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” Bradley Whitford. That’s because none of the other seven nominees in last year’s field qualify this time around.

Granted, in this same category, Giancarlo Esposito landed a nod in 2020 for “Better Call Saul” and for his character in “The Mandalorian” in the Guest Actor category.

Predictions

1. David Harbour, “Stranger Things”
2. Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones”
If John Lithgow doesn’t take this Emmy, it will be a monumental upset. He won the “lead” actor category for his role in “The Crown” at the SAG Awards and is a 12-time Emmy nominee and four-time winner. If anyone finds a way to steal his, um, crown among this crowded field, it will likely either be Ron Cephas Jones from “This Is Us” or David Harbour from “Stranger Things.” [Posted July 25]
