Looking back on Seth Rogen‘s earlier career, did anyone think he’d be part of a cast of a Best Picture nominee like “The Fabelmans“? I mean, sure, yeah: Rogen’s proven repeatedly that he has the acting and writing chops to be taken seriously in the movie industry. For every forgettable comedy like “Observe And Report” (or raunchy one like “Pineapple Express“), Rogen has also been part of estimable, all-time classics, like his acting debut “Freaks And Geeks” or 2007’s “Superbad.”

But with both films already released in theaters, the box office results for the two films are pretty far apart.

Ok, so recently we received the annual “The Big Lebowski” sequel update (still not happening) and the bi-monthly “Arrested Development” update (still being teased, likely never gonna happen), so why not give you the bi-annual update on “Pineapple Express 2” and “Superbad 2”?

While we’ve heard rumblings that a ‘Pineapple’ sequel could happen, when The Playlist spoke to the film’s writer, Evan Goldberg, at Comic-Con, he admitted that the team on the film, producer Judd Apatow, stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, and director David Gordon Green, actively petitioned Columbia for a sequel on their own.

James Cameron wants to pimp NASA’s ride. The director has encouraged NASA to strap a 3D camera to its Mars rover Curiosity. No word yet if the 3D camera will be readied in time for a 2011 launch, but the prospect of NASA personnel sitting in the control room wearing 3D glasses is hilarious/awful.

Is the cast of “Superbad” reuniting for the MTV Movie Awards? In a cryptic tweet by Christopher Mintz-Plasse he says “Filming a promo for the MTV Movie Awards tomorrow.

‘Green Hornet’ Pushed To January, Will Go 3D

Trouble, or rational thinking, has struck the post-production process of “The Green Hornet,” which now sees itself moving from a loaded Christmas release season into mid-January. Nikki Finke reports that execs have considered “3D enhancements” to goose up what reports suggest the studio is unhappy with. Finke, always the gossiper, also hints that other studios are claiming from what they’ve seen that “Hornet” is “unreleaseable,” but Sony distributed “The Ugly Truth” last year so clearly few movies under their banner could be classified as unreleaseable.

Viola Davis Joins ‘The Help’ With Emma Stone

As reported in Mid-March, Emma Stone is set to take the lead role in the Dreamworks period drama “The Help,” based on Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel, about a recent college graduate (Stone) in the 1960s who decides to write a book highlighting the plight of African-American domestic help in Mississippi.

Now Viola Davis (“Doubt”) has stepped into one of the key roles of a maid. Actor/filmmaker Tate Taylor (the comedy “Pretty Ugly People”) is writing and directing, and Chris Columbus is producing through his 1492 banner.

Seth Rogen To Voice Alien In Greg Mottola’s ‘Paul,’ Bill Hader, Jason Bateman & Kristen Wiig Also Join Cast

“We’ll probably steal from the Judd Apatow Universe for some of the casting around [the lead parts], because we need funny people,” Greg Mottola told us when we hung out with him in March re: the casting of his upcoming buddies-on-a road-trip who-meet-an-alien film, “Paul,” starring Brit duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (“Shaun of The Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”).

And it looks like the “Superbad” and “Adventureland” director wasn’t kidding. According to Variety, Seth Rogen has signed on to voice the titular alien in the film.

Remember that “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express” writers Seth Rogen and buddy Evan Goldberg has signed on to write an episode of “The Simpsons“?

Well, series creator Matt Groening has revealed the plot details and naturally there’s a voice role for Rogen too.

“He wrote an episode we’ll be reading soon, where Comic-Book Guy creates a superhero comic which then gets made into a feature film. Homer plays the lead and to slim down, Seth Rogen will play his personal trainer.”

Hmm, just like Rogen has slimmed down dramatically in real life (see him at the Globes?) We haven’t watched “The Simpsons” in years, but maybe Rogen and Goldberg’s episode will be worth tuning in for once?

Simon Pegg Won’t Appear In ‘Inglorious Bastards’

Yes, being “in talks” for a role never means its a total reality. Actors are dropping like flies off of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Bastards” WWII project due to scheduling conflicts. As we said when we wrote about David Krumholtz reportedly leaving the project (and Samm Levine taking his spot), Tarantino is rushing this project for an October start date in Berlin and there’s going to be causalities of war, err, timing.

The latest is Simon Pegg, who was in talks to play the British Lieutenant Archie Hicox, but had to drop off the project because of the aforementioned conflicts according to a post on his Myspace page.

‘Pineapple Express’ Burnin’ Up The Box-Office Already

Maybe the studios will really want a “Pineapple Express” sequel and unlike “Superbad” which they also wanted. Maybe Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will decide to write another one.

We honestly hope not, but regardless, David Gordon Green’s directorial effort for the Judd Apatow crew is burning up the box-office already and it’s not even Friday yet. It set the record for the best August Wednesday opening ever taking in 12.1 million from 3,072 theaters (honestly we didn’t even know it was opening up two days early; this seems like a trend, see “Tropic Thunder” which is following that Wednesday model).

Remember when we said we were skeptical that Greg Mottola’s coming-of-age comedy drama “Adventureland,” would come out in August of this year, considering there was no trailer, no one-sheet, and no mention of the film on Miramax’s website or press site?

Well, we were right.

We got a tentative release schedule fwd’d to us of Miramax films and “Adventureland” was slotted for a loose May 2009 date. We checked with Miramax and now they’re saying the less specific date of “second quarter 2009.”

Does this mean the juice Mottola accrued from “Superbad,” has already warn off?

Anyone remember, “Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse,” the very random YouTube short floating around last year starring “Knocked Up” cast-mates/Judd Apatow mainstays, Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel as themselves if they were degenerate roommates living in squalor during the apocalypse?

Well, the short, based on a script by Rogen and his writing partner/bff Evan Goldberg is becoming a full blown feature for Mandate Pictures according to Variety. (the duo wrote “Superbad,” “Pineapple Express” and are even going to pen an episode of “The Simpsons“)

Apparently when the trailer hit last summer, many production companies started vying for the project which is being called an action comedy (and now that these guys have cache, they can probably get whatever the fuck they want green-lit).

Judd Apatow stable boys /”Superbad,” “Pineapple Express” writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have been tapped to write an episode of the Simpsons, or rather they reached out and asked if they could pen a script.

“We called The Simpsons and asked if we could write an episode. Evan actually met James L Brooks at a party and James said he really liked ‘Superbad,’ so we thought there’s our in. Maybe we could ask to write a Simpsons,” Rogen told Collider.

Dude is an insufferable one-trick-pony who does the same bit over and over again (see “The Office,” “My Super Ex-Girlfriend,” and “Juno” which he almost help ruin). “The Rocker” stars Rainn Wilson and Christina Applegate, but curiously enough she’s hardly (or not even in?) this trailer.

Remember the endearing “School of Rock”? If that was PG-13 audiences. This is one is for, uhhh… PG 15 ones (slightly older kids) and stoners that will laugh at fucking anything.

Kanye West loves connect four, we all know that, but he also loves playing the game with actors from Judd Apatow comedies, namely Jonah Hill (“Superbad,” “Knocked Up,”). Next week, parcheesi with Michael Cera, followed by Uno with Paul Rudd.

When asked in a separate interview who Judd Apatow, Jonah Hill or Michael Cera was, the entire rest of the hip-hop community had no clue what we were talking about. So far, Milton Bradley has not reached out to West for any endorsement deals, but the year is still young.
