Lautner was signed to “Max Steel” first but only after Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner watched SNL hosted by Lautner, where in the opening monologue he did backflips, cracked some jokes and was generally very pleasant, did he get on the phone and get a contract in place for “Stretch Armstrong.” Universal, Hasbro and Lautner’s agency WME moved quickly, getting Brian Grazer on board, making a decision to shoot the the film in 3D and securing a 2012 release date.

Deadline reports that Lionsgate will have to find a director and a script polish by July in order to accommodate a shooting schedule for Lautner, otherwise the “Twilight” werewolf will have to be recast. The film will be yet another in a string of several films cashing in on the newfound fame of 18-year old Lautner, also lined up to star as the lead title characters of both “Stretch Armstrong” and “Max Steel” in addition to his usual Twilight gig.

Let’s preface this by saying — we’re not stupid (ok, maybe a little). We know Hollywood studios have been remaking, sequelizing and generally trying their best to bring down cinematic discourse, despite artists working inside the system to change that.

But in 2009, a disturbing level of desperation set in like we’ve never seen before. The act of “branding” seemed to have gotten way out of hand like a wet T-shirt party at an undersexed frat house, and we may have reached the tipping point — Hollywood doesn’t need stinking artists, and they barely need scripts, because anything that is an existing property can become a movie.
