First reported by us a week ago as part of our exclusive interview with Criterion, new details have emerged about IFC’s relationship with the boutique DVD company. It appears IFC’s rental exclusivity deal with Blockbuster is over (thank christ!) and they will be using both MPI and Criterion to help distribute their films. According to Variety, IFC will determine which films will head to MPI and which will go to Criterion, though Lisa Schwartz, IFC’s executive VP of Sales and Business Development does admit that having Criterion in their pocket will sweeten the pot when discussing potential distribution deals.

Nikki Finke quotes a studio executive talking about this weekend, where four R-rated films topped the box office, saying, “What a sad statement on movie-going humanity.” Hm, is this executive at Warner Bros., home of the R-rated, male-irresponsibility flick “The Hangover” or the violent, often grotesque “Watchmen”? Is he at Fox, distributors of the Franco-hating sex trafficking action movie “Taken” and the wildly historically inaccurate kids’ picture “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”? Is he at Sony, the company that distributed “The Ugly Truth,” where a ten year old boy rapes a woman with a remote controlled vibrator?

After calling it the hidden gem of the box-office this weekend and lamenting the fact that we didn’t write a proper review, we thought we’d try to correct this mistake.

One of the best pictures of the year so far is not a particularly sexy or attractive film on the surface. It contains no Rorschach, special effects, star actors, furry butterflies, action, or CGI of any kind. It’s a quiet and emotionally moving little foreign film and family reunion tale from Japan that is devastating in its own simple and beautifully nuanced way.

Attending film festivals can be a bitch (boo hoo, we know, your heart bleeds…). You generally have a tremendous time watching films all day, but finding the time and energy to write reviews for each one of them can be often be impossible. This was the case with the Indepedent Film Festival of Boston. While we did review several films (including, “‘Big Fan” and “500 Days of Summer” to name a few bigger examples), we never did properly review one of our favorite films from the festival and probably one of our favorites movies of the year so far [ed.

Sigh, Cannes 2009. So many films so little time. Another film we came this — close to seeing was a picture called, “Dogtooth,” that sounded incredibly interesting. It’s basically about three siblings completely sheltered and cut-off from the outside world and forced to play games according to rules created by their overprotective parents. It’s by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and it won the top Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes. Corneliu Porumboiu’s “Police, Adjective” won the jury prize and Bahman Ghobadi’s docu-fiction portrait of the underground music scene in Iran, “No One Knows About The Persian Cats” took a special prize.

The Independent Film Festival of Boston has announced their award winners with the top prizes going to Tze Chun’s “Children of Invention,” Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Still Walking,” and Joe Berlinger’s documentary, “Crude.”

We’ll be totally honest, we saw a lot of films at IFFB Boston, but skipped most of these to see other films (maybe that was a bad idea?) however, we are super, super glad that Kore-eda’s low-key, but striking family drama, “Still Walking” took the audience awards as the Ozu-ish picture was immensely moving, tremendously worthy and one of our favorite films of the festival if not our favorite (review coming…) aside from possibly, “Bronson.” We also expected it to be totally overlooked.
