In a day and age where superhero storytelling is constantly pushing the boundaries and blurring the lines of television and films via Marvels Studios and shows like The Boys or The Umbrella Academy, Jupiter’s Legacy is decidedly old-hat. It may have gotten a pass five to ten years ago, but today it just feels like a step in the wrong direction.

Netflix began its superhero programming with the massively popular Marvel series such as “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” and “Luke Cage.” However, those series didn’t last, as Disney now has the rights back to those. Well, that isn’t stopping Netflix from keeping the superhero dream alive with its new series, “Jupiter’s Legacy,” which might very well be the streamer’s answer to “The Boys.”

Opening nearly five years ago in 2013, Guillermo del Toro‘s “Pacific Rim” was far from a cultural milestone upon release. Handsomely produced with del Toro’s obsessive attention to detail, the Kaiju monster mash movie eluded both mainstream success and widespread critical approval. The Mexican director’s film had its diehard fans (myself included), but the mishmash of disparate influences (Japanese animation, old monster movies, art deco architecture) proved too much for the masses.

Of course, he’s rotated through a few guises in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and in “Pacific Rim Uprising” he finds himself decked out in mech pilot gear. And he’ll be the first to tell you, it’s comfortable.

After a somewhat underwhelming Comic-Con Teaser Trailer, Universal has released the first full trailer for the sequel “Pacific Rim Uprising”. The film follows John Boyega’s Jake Pentacost, the son of Idris Elba’s character in the first film, as he pilots a Jaegar to, of course, fight off a new horde of Kaiju. Scott Eastwood also joins the franchise as Nate Lambert, another Jaegar pilot.
