Since its inception, more than anything, Apple TV+ has excelled at genre television, especially in the sci-fi space. The sheer number of science fiction shows that populate the relatively small service is frankly overwhelming. Yet the best of those shows has somewhat flown under the radar. “Silo” premiered last year to acclaim, if not the deafening noise that followed something like “Severance.” Created by the great Graham Yost (“Justified”) and starring Rebecca Ferguson, the show’s mystery-box approach to a future society kept viewers like me compelled over the course of its ten-episode first season.

“Succession” may be over, but there’s another show still on HBO about a wealthy patriarch with three meddlesome children that seems only to be growing in popularity. And this one shows no signs of ending soon. Creator and star Danny McBride have suggested that he wants “The Righteous Gemstones” to run for years, turning it into a “Dynasty”-esque tapestry of a wealthy Southern family’s strengths and weaknesses.

Twenty-one years ago, Robert De Niro co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival with Jane Rosenthal. While its dates sandwich it between more prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice, film fans can’t sleep on the festival, especially because of its world premieres. And Tribeca is also a major event that helps kick off the summer months in NYC. During the opening night celebration, Martin Scorsese and New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that De Niro “revitalized the city after 9/11” and that “the Tribeca festival is an indomitable institution and beacon of the city.”

Mike White returns to HBO on July 11, eight years after the end of his brilliant “Enlightened,” with the tropical dramedy “The White Lotus,” an engaging 6-episode series that has a great cast, smart dialogue, and just enough laughs, even if it feels a little unable to transcend its set-ups every now and then. Perhaps more damagingly for its potential to reach a larger audience, it asks people to spend a great deal of time with a group of relatively unlikable people (one of whom may be the most toxically abrasive person on TV this year).

The actor-to-director transition is one that we’re seeing more and more often. But for every Clint Eastwood or Angelina Jolie there’s a Nicolas Cage (bet you forgot he directed 2003’s “Sonny”). Which is why it’s so exciting when a beloved actor like Ethan Hawke churns out a genuinely heartfelt and good film.

Hawke’s previous directorial efforts have mostly been centered around music, such as 2006’s “The Hottest State” and 2014’s “Seymour: An Introduction,” a documentary about pianist Seymour Bernstein.

Based on the beloved novel by Willy Vlautin, and starring Charlie Plummer, Steve Buscemi, Chloe Sevigny, Steve Zahn, Thomas Mann, and Amy Seimetz, the film tells the story of a teenage Charley, who finds a reprieve from his knockabout home life in a horse named Lean On Pete.

Last month, we got what was supposed to be the final trailer for “War For The Planet Of The Apes,” but given the rave reviews the film has received (here’s ours) it’s not a huge surprise that 20th Century Fox is making one last push.

A new promo has been unveiled for ‘War’ which by most accounts is the most intense entry in the series. Matt Reeves directs the continuation from “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes,” which sees Caesar leading another charge against humans who want to eliminate apes.

As we’ve seen multiple times over, not every movie based on a well known property makes it a guarantee for the big screen success. 20th Century Fox failed in relaunching “The Planet Of The Apes” the first time out when they handed the keys to Tim Burton and Mark Wahlberg in 2001. A decade later they tried again with “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” and beating everyone’s expectation they scored, and they had another hit two years later with “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.” Now the question is how much bigger can the franchise get with “War For The Planet Of The Apes,” and we’re about to find out.
