‘Twilight’: Lionsgate Developing A Reboot TV Series Of The Teen Vampires Hit

Lionsgate is behind an upcoming “Hunger Games” prequel film with “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” looking to expand that story with a different setting without having a pricey star like Jennifer Lawrence return. However, that’s not the only young adult genre franchise from their IP library they’re looking to resurrect from the grave as a series reboot based on the “Twilight” franchise is in the works at Lionsgate Television.

We’d like to propose a ban on the words “suck,” “toothless,” “defanged,” and “bloodless” in all future reviews of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” Of course, this would be an easier task for writers if director David Slade, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, and source novelist Stephenie Meyer hadn’t made a film that epitomizes each of those punny terms. At least make us critics work for it, guys.

Of course, “Hard Candy” and “30 Days of Night” filmmaker Slade isn’t entirely to blame.

File under: news that everyone under the sun expected, but hey, why not close the loop on this one while we’re at it.

As long suspected the fourth installment of the “Twilight” franchise, “Breaking Dawn,” has been broken up ala “Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows” into two separate pictures.

Why make four “Twilight” books into five films? The same reason why seven “Harry Potter” films were broken up into eight films: more bang for the studios buck, after all Summit Entertainment has grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide with the first two films combined.

Andrew Niccol To Direct His First Film In 5 Years ‘I’m.mortal’ This Summer

Sorely missed sci-fi auteur Andrew Niccol’s upcoming year is shaping up to be a hell of a busy one for a guy that has only directed three films since 1997. Niccol is currently prepping an upcoming script for a sci-fi film “I’m.mortal” (yes, that wacky, punny punctuation is intentional) which he will also direct, THR reports.

Niccol will once again return to the sort of social-based science-fiction of “Gattaca” and “S1m0ne” after 2005’s crime drama “Lord of War.” You can read the THR-supplied synopsis below:

The story is set in the not-too-distant future where the aging gene has been switched off.

Andrew Niccol’s Adaptation Of Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ Looking To Film In Early 2011

Yesterday, Stephenie Meyer caused Twilight fans to have a mini-freakout when she announced that a spin off novella, “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner” would hit book stores on June 5th, just a few weeks ahead of “Twlight: Eclipse” landing in theaters. But the “Twilight” books aren’t the only Meyer work getting ready to the big screen.

Today, Deadline Hollywood has updated the progress of the big screen adaptation of Meyer’s first adult novel “The Host.” Last fall it was reported that Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca,” “Lord Of War”) had been brought on board to write and direct the film.

OMG Stephenie Meyer Announces ‘Twilight’ Novella

Surprise! “The Twilight Saga” in print form is not quite finished yet, as author Stephenie Meyer has announced that a new novella, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” will be released on June 5th.

The story revolves around a minor character in the third novel “Eclipse” who is played by fifteen-year-old Jodelle Ferland in the upcoming film adaptation. As the novels are written from protagonist Bella’s perspective, this story will move the narration beyond the main character and examine the life of a newly-made vampire (whose death is featured in “Eclipse,” thankfully, there’s no room for more expansion here).

Now that Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has amassed an almost unholy $481 million dollars worldwide in two weeks of release ($230 million domestically), the studio is setting its vampiric sights on what’s next and no, we don’t mean the third installment, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”

Directed by David Slade (“3o Days Of Night”) the third film in the ‘Twilight’ series is already shot and in the can and will hit theaters next summer on June 30 (every third MTV report says how guy friendly it will be with more action and aggression, fyi).

‘New Moon’ Review: Still Emo Tween, Still Sub-Par & Groan-Inducing

The teenage supernatural melodrama “New Moon” made us feel like we were back in high school. Frustrated, bored, and more than a little angsty, we haven’t rolled our eyes this much since we were adolescents ourselves. Chris Weitz’s take on Stephenie Meyer’s second novel in the “Twilight series” may be marginally better than the first film, but it’s still a movie filled with groan-inducing dialogue, awful characters, and sub-par special effects.

“New Moon” doesn’t take any time in establishing the fact that its male leads — Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner — are supposed to be sexy.

Man, we were just having an offline discussion of Andrew Niccol, the New Zealand-born writer-director behind the excellent sci-fi film, “Gattaca” (and the not so excellent “Lord Of War”) and what he had been up to. Well apart from a project called “The Cross” in the works for sometime, it looks like he’s already looking towards the next project and has become part of “The Host” — an adaptation of “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s first adult novel.

What was the best film at TIFF? An Indiewire poll, not that scientific because they didn’t include us, voted the Coen Brothers’ “A Serious Man,” as the best film from the festival. We won’t argue much with that choice. It definitely was one of the best films.

SHOCKER! As if you really needed to confirm this?? Michael Caine says, no Johnny Depp won’t be in Batman 3 as the Riddler. Uhh, duh? This is your non-story for the day.

Radiohead already sullied themselves once for “Twilight,” providing the music for the closing credits of the film — which were oddly not advertised or note in advance in any way; Radiohead fans found out if and when they saw the movie in theaters… someone was embarrassed possibly?

And that relationship Radiohead has with Stephenie Meyer work might continue. According to an interview with Rotten Tomatoes (via P4K), “New Moon” director Chris Weitz, Radiohead’s Thom York is interested in participating.

Summit Entertainment might be planning to deliver “Twilight” franchise installments in rapid succession — so far films3 and 4, “New Moon,” and “Eclipse” are planned less than 9 months apart; the director for “Eclipse” is almost in place — but news of a fourth film, “Breaking Dawn,” might be overstated.

The Wrap reports that Summit is “deep” into planning the adaptation of the fourth Stephenie Meyer-penned book in the “Twilight” quadrilogy. They’re claiming “Breaking Dawn,” will start production in late spring 2010.

Dakota Fanning Signs On For ‘New Moon’

Back in January, Dakota Fanning was in negotiations to star in “New Moon,” the rushed-into- production sequel to “Twilight,” Stephenie Meyer’s abstinence romance novel about sexually-challenged teenagers and vampires.

EW has now confirmed that Fanning, who is now 15-years-old, will star as Jane, a psycho vampire who cripples people with her mind. Part of a corrupt group who govern all vampires.

In January Fanning made this insightful comment about the books and her then-possible inclusion in the franchise.

Man, someone who isn’t a mostly faceless blogger finally said it: Stephenie Meyer’s prose is for milquetoast for toddlers.

Legendary horror and drama author, Stephen King, has said enough already and called the “Twilight” author out.

“Both J.K. Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”King said, comparing the ‘Harry Potter’ author to Meyer in an interview with USA Today.

For thirteen year olds and those that care, directors James Mangold (of the very underrated “3:10 To Yuma” remake) and Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Orphanage”) are already circling the the third installment of the “Twilight” franchise according to Anne Thompson.

Titled “Eclipse,” Summit are insisting that no meetings are scheduled with directors yet, but they’re obviously shady bastards not be trusted for an inch.

Well, maybe all the negative buzz and hurt feelings over Catherine Hardwicke’s unceremonious shit-canning has made Summit Entertainment tread lightly (or lighter) with the the obsessive fans of the hokey goth-romance books, because now it sounds like Lautner may have kept the gig.
