As a young man, the Denver-born McKay cut his teeth at venerated Chicago comedy institutions, like Second City, IO, and Upright Citizens Brigade. McKay then went on to audition for “Saturday Night Live,” where he failed to make the cut as a cast member.

Take Will Ferrell discussing the nature of his split with director Adam McKay. The two had a longstanding working and creative relationship for years, Ferrell starring in many of McKay’s movies, and the two had a successful production company Gary Sanchez that released several successful comedies.

If we did, surely Adam McKay’s 2008 films “Step Brothers” would be extremely high on the list. The director says he’s asked about a sequel for the film “constantly,” but the gang of McKay, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly seems torn.

Reilly has become one of the best comedic actors of our time. Appearing in films like “Talladega Nights,” “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” and of course, “Step Brothers,” Reilly has cemented himself as one of the best around. However, we often forget that the actor rose to fame thanks to some of his more serious efforts, particularly with Paul Thomas Anderson.

The film, which starred the incomparable Will Ferrell and John C.
“You have to resist the temptation,” the actor told Rolling Stone. “It’s just tough because the things everyone wants you to do sequels of are special because there’s not a sequel of it.

Unless you’re Marion Cotillard, with the Oscar-winning actress recently revealing that not only is she a fan of the antics of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, but she gets outright choked up whenever she watches the comedy.

“It might sound weird, but I always cry at the end of ‘Step Brothers.’ I’ve seen the movie ten times, and it still touches me at the end, when Will Ferrell sings,” she told W (via Vulture).

Ultimately, the question is moot: Ferrell just is. From his cameo in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” to this week’s “The Other Guys,” Ferrell doesn’t merely act; like Tom Hardy in “Inception,” he embodies his characters, taking the legacy of Konstantin Stanislavski, Lee Strasberg and Marlon Brando and bringing it to its ultimate conclusion.

Last we heard from Deadline, “Anchorman 2,” while scuttled by Paramount because of its $60 million budget, still could potentially happen down the road.

But the budget probably wasn’t the only issue and it’s likely Paramount wasn’t convinced of Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s outlandish (but awesome) idea to make the sequel a bonafide musical, that would hit Broadway first and then the big screen.

While an amazing and ambitious project for hardcore “Anchorman” fans (and in step with some of their initial, very off-the-wall concepts for the first film), its questionable that mainstream audiences would connect with it, hence Paramount’s refusal to give the project a green light.

In a move that’s not entirely odd or surprising considering he scored, “Step Brothers,” musician/composer extraordinaire Jon Brion has been chosen to score Adam McKay’s “The Other Guys” starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as bumbling B-list detectives hoping to take down a shady billionaire financier (Steve Coogan) while also trying to show up two superstar policeman (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).

According to recent test screenings Brion’s name was listed as the composer, but its unknown if he enlisted any special musicians to assist again this time.

It placed high on the 2008 Black List, and is evidently Carson ‘ScriptShadow’ Reeves’ favorite script of all time, but Raymond Carver adaptation “Everything Must Go” has been moving pretty slowly towards production. Until today, that is, with the news from Variety that Will Ferrell has signed to play the lead. Based on Carver’s story “Why Don’t You Dance,” it centers on a man who, when thrown out of his house by his wife, starts to live on the front lawn, trying to sell his possessions.

2008 is obviously still on the brain and at will be at least for the next week if not longer. Here’s ten films we thought were grossly underrated. We were going to title this the 10 Most Underrated Films of 2008, but someone would have surely balked, only because we haven’t posted our top 20 list yet. These were definitely under-appreciated in our book though.

“In Bruges“
Colin Farell and Brendan Gleeson starred as contract killers sent to the medieval Belgian city of Bruges after a botched hit at the behest of their loose cannon boss Ralph Fiennes.

So “Step Brothers” was retarded, but kind of awesome, right? In fact, the more and more we watch scenes that have leaked onto YouTube or deleted scenes (“It’s the fucking Catalina wine mixer“!) we kind of shy away from the fact that the film is pure mentally-challenged juvenalia and just enjoy the film for simply how absurd and funny it is. Despite the low-grade we gave it, in retrospect it’s feeling like our favorite comedy for the summer (let’s face it, “Pineapple Express” was kind of a disappointment).

If you haven’t seen the flat-out dementia of the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly comedy “Step Brothers” you probably should. Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Ferrell’s longtime buddy Adam McKay (he directs/co-produces many Ferrell vehicles like ‘Anchorman’ and and ‘Talladega Nights’), the film is spectacularly stupid and almost gloriously retarded. It was so idiotic, we almost didn’t know what to make of it at first, and gave it a low grade. We still stand by that score as it’s not a good movie per se, but shit if isn’t pretty fucking funny in the most puerile manner.

Yet another deleted scene from “Step Brothers,” and this one is very R-Rated. Rob Riggle’s character gets a tad too excited while talking about the Catalina Wine Mixer and has a bit of a heart attack. But it’s all part of the gig and aggressive marketing tactics. “You need big balls for this.”

There’s no soundtrack for the demented Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly comedy “Step Brothers.” But as we noted in our review, there’s a lot of pop-music in the film.

Unfortunately, Sony and or the powers that be decided to not release a soundtrack disc. At least not yet. As previously noted Jon Brion composed the score and enlisted members of Wilco and Deerhoof to help him out on a couple of tracks as well.

Oh that unstoppable juggernaut called “The Dark Knight.” Will the madness never end? Not any time soon. In it’s second week of release, ‘TDK’ nabbed itself another $75.6 million in box-office receipts making it the fastest film to ever reach $300 million in the history of motion picture.

“Step Brothers,” the Will Ferrell comedy with thespian-turned buffoon John C. Reilly earned a healthy $30 million for the #2 slot and the other major studio film opening this weekend, “X-Files: I Want To Believe,” laughably came in at a pathetic fourth position with a meager, $10 million total (the film cost $30 million to make). The ABBA musical “Mama Mia” has proven to be a hit.
