In the Starz adaptation of the novel of the same name by CJ Skuse, those feelings are amplified through a bloody killing spree as our antihero protagonist desperately seeks to be seen, no matter the consequences — or body count.

Ava DuVernay‘s TV follow-up to her film “Origin” isn’t happening anymore. Deadline reports that the director’s romantic drama series for Starz with Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff will fold as DuVernay’s overall deal with Warner Bros. Television ends. In just the past decade, the network has released “The White Queen,” “The White Princess,” The Spanish Queen,” and “Becoming Elizabeth.” They return to their royal monikers with the Samantha Morton-led “The Serpent Queen.” While the Catherine de Medici series is definitely in the same wheelhouse as those aforementioned series, it’s also a bit more brutal, nastier, and, ultimately, more interesting.

Playing out more like a compelling but ultimately cursory Wikipedia entry than a full-throated exposé, Starz’s newest documentary series “Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?” may be one of the better dives into the socialite-turned-Epstein-accomplice, but it never really answers its own titular question. More polished, and less salacious, than the other two Maxwell series — Peacock’s “Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell” and Paramount+’s “Ghislaine: Partner in Crime” — Starz’s series spends a bit more time on Maxwell’s life before meeting Epstein and after his arrest, for better and worse. 

Organized into three episodes, the Erica Gornall-directed series uses its first hour “Queen Bee” to track Maxwell’s relationship with her father, the media mogul Robert Maxwell.

There’s so much overlong TV out there in the streaming era, but the Starz horror-comedy “Shining Vale” has to be one of this year’s most damning, counter-intuitive examples. Because it needs to take up so much running time, its few good ideas about characters, alive and dead, lose much of their impact. And while the series achieves a lighthearted gothic tone to match the haunted house it mostly takes place in, both its horror and comedy are used cheaply.

Co-starring Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, Darby Camp, and Aleksandar Filimonović, “Gaslight” is about the Watergate scandal and focuses on several untold stories including Richard Nixon’s subordinates, deranged zealots, and the whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole enterprise crashing down.
