Can you even hear a guild awards ceremony if it occurs after the Academy Awards? Thanks to the WGA strike, we’re about to find out. The nominees were announced this morning for the 2024 WGA Awards which will take place on April 14. On the film side, likely Oscar winner “American Fiction” led an Adapted Category including “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and, um, “Nyad.” The Original Screenplay category features “Barbie” (in its correct category), “The Holdovers,” “Air,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

As always, only WGA writers qualify for the guild awards which means a slew of potential nominees including likely Oscar Original Screenplay winner “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “The Zone of Interest,” among others, did not qualify.

The final season of “Star Trek: Picard” is closely approaching. Created by Terry Matalas, the series will reunite Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard with most of the main cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Returning to the “Star Trek” universe are LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, and Jeri Ryan, who reprise their respective roles as Geordi La Forge, Worf, William Riker, Beverly Crusher, Deanna Troi, Lore, and Seven of Nine.

When “Star Trek” first launched in 1966, nobody could have expected the worldwide phenomenon it created. But credit where credit is due: it appears that “Star Trek: The Next Generation” is putting its own mark on “Star Trek” longevity. If you credit 1994’s “Star Trek: Generations” as being the last film in the original series, then that show had a 28-year-run. But with the return of the full ‘Next Generation’ cast in Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard,” the second crew will have been at things even longer: 1987 to 2023, a whopping 36 years.

I’m slightly fascinated by the proliferation and seemingly spreading-too-thin-ness of the “Star Trek” franchise by Paramount, Paramount+, and Viacom. Clearly, the franchise has stalled as a movie property; the films cost a certain amount and never recoup the way they should, and that fourth “Star Trek” movie is going to be in so much limbo, it’s easy to foresee the current cast just moving on. So, Paramount and Viacom have clearly retreated to television, putting the franchise all over CBS-All Access (now Paramount+) and seemingly going overboard.

Disney Plus not only took its first Emmy Awards on the third night of virtual Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies but five altogether. The trophies went to “The Mandalorian” in the Cinematography (Single Camera, Half-Hour), Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Production Design (Narrative, Half-Hour) and Special Visual Effects. A key drama series win, however, went to “Succession” which won single picture editing honor over multiple episodes of its own as well as those from “Ozark” and the aforementioned “Mandalorian.” Notable as all three programs are up for Outstanding Drama Series on Sunday night.

To go into all the reasons why there is a fairly sizable contingent of “Star Trek” fans that really dislike the recent CBS All Access franchise offerings would take entirely too long. Suffice it to say, some diehard ‘Trek’ fans are not happy with the current direction of the franchise, spearheaded by Alex Kurtzman. And that distaste extends to the most recent new series, “Star Trek: Picard.” But according to the series’ showrunner, that level of hate is to be expected.

In hindsight, the best thing to ever happen to ‘Star Trek‘ was its unaired pilot. ‘The Cage,’ which introduced us to Christopher Pike, set a precedent for the ‘Star Trek’ universe that has never been broken. Characters can (and do) cross over between series and timelines, but always as a way of showing the evolving history of the Federation and its citizens. Whereas other franchises might get dinged for bringing back familiar faces and exploring established backstories, ‘Star Trek’ has made that a core part of its identity since pretty much day one.
