A new trailer has arrived for the Sundance film “The Evening Hour” (via The Film Stage), and this new teaser gives us a first real look at the upcoming drama. “The Evening Hour” cast includes Philip Ettinger (known for HBO‘s “I Know This Much is True” and Paul Schrader‘s “First Reformed“), Stacy Martin, Cosmo Jarvis, Kerry Bishé, Lili Taylor, Michael Trotter, Marc Menchaca, Ross Partridge, Frank Hoyt Taylor, and Tess Harper. 

Braden King (“Here“) directs from a script penned by Elizabeth Palmore.

The Playlist’s Sundance review written by Joe Blessing called the film “A quietly powerful portrait of a young man forced to make impossible decisions to try to live decently in a landscape torn apart by forces far larger than himself, “The Evening Hour” is both an empathetic and sobering drama.” While Marc Ruffalo won all the awards for HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True,” including the Emmy and Golden Globe, Ettinger’s work as the younger version of Ruffalo in college was terrific work that really stood out.

A quietly powerful portrait of a young man forced to make impossible decisions to try to live decently in a landscape torn apart by forces far larger than himself, “The Evening Hour” is both an empathetic and sobering drama. Taking place in a mostly forgotten corner of Appalachia dominated by coal mining and rampant opioid use, “The Evening Hour” is the story of Cole Freeman (Philip Ettinger), who by day tenderly takes care of the elderly and by night deals prescription drugs according to his own moral code.  Director Braden King, working from a novel by Carter Sickels, spends the rest of the film showing the complexity of Cole’s code and how the return of an old friend to his small town, Terry Rose (Cosmo Jarvis), pushes that code to its breaking point.

Most movies portraying the drug economy envision it as an outside force that must be avoided at all costs, but to the characters in “The Evening Hour,” it’s as totally pervasive as the air they breath; every character is somehow affected by it and a young man like Cole must live his life in relation to it somehow.

With sequences of sustained eeriness, in which the flesh creeps relentlessly off your bones, and one-two-three-punch jump scares so effective you practically trip over the skin you’ve just leaped out of, David Bruckner‘s Sundance midnight title “The Night House” does a very good job of parting you from your epidermis. But while it often frightens the bejaysus out of you, Bruckner’s sophomore feature, after 2017’s “The Ritual,” doesn’t rely on schlock tactics.

“Interesting” is such a polite, lukewarm, colorless word. And given that Brady Corbet‘s arrestingly ambitious “Vox Lux” is about as polite, lukewarm, and colorless as Natalie Portman reimagined as a foulmouthed Ariana Grande sporting a spangled catsuit and a God complex, it is scarcely adequate here. But it does speak to the great strides that Corbet has made since his debut, “The Childhood of a Leader,” which went similarly hell-for-leather at its grandiose agenda, but for quite long periods managed, noisily and show-offily, not to be that interesting at all.
