Initially, the film was slated for release on January 13, 2023, before then being pushed back to October 6, and finally August 30.

Sony is really taking a beating with its Spider-Man universe of late. While the “Spider-Man” movies produced by Marvel are still gigantic mega-hits and the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ movies are critically acclaimed blockbusters (the first one won the Best Animated Feature Oscar), the rest of their SSMU (Sony’s Spider-Man Universe) woefully lags behind. “Morbius” was 2022’s superhero laughingstock, and “Madame Web” appears as if it will be 2024’s version (the film opened to a paltry $25.8 million this weekend and was a huge critical dud).

The idea of an R-rated superhero film is interesting. Some comic books are published as adults only and are filled with nudity, cursing, and extreme violence. However, most mainstream superhero comic books, especially from Marvel and DC, are definitely PG-13-equivalent. So, even though Deadpool says “fuck” and does horrible violent things in the films, his comic book source material isn’t nearly as raunchy. All this to say, the idea that Sony is making “Kraven the Hunter,” one of the studio’s various “Spider-Man” spinoff films, R-rated is… a choice.
