It’s an almost ridiculously weird weekend at the box-office. Five films are opening wide with little to no buzz are going to hog up screens for a few weeks before they can sneak away to DVD. It may not be Thanksgiving yet, but someone let the turkeys run wild. Actually, some of them aren’t terrible, but “The Expendables” in its second week should mow over the competition. “The Switch,” “Piranhas 3D,” “The Lottery Ticket,” “Nanny Mcphee and the Big Bang,” and “Vampires Suck” graze pastures across this great land starting today.

With Fatih’s Akin “Soul Kitchen” set to open tomorrow, here’s a reprint of our review of the film from TIFF last year.

“Soul Kitchen”? Who, what, where, when, why? Because Turkish/German filmmaker Fatih Akin is quickly becoming one of the fastest rising international auteurs out there and at the age of 36, is already amassing an excellent body of work.

His nihilistic love story “Head On” was wonderfully electrically-charged and last year’s penetrating and powerful Kieslowski-esque chance and fate drama, “The Edge of Heaven,” was one of the year’s best.

Film festivals are fun, but lord do they crush the body: no sleep, starvation, hectic running around, plus bouts of terrible, on-the-run eating. How some do this and manage to party on top of this while churning out copy seems unfathomable.

Day 1 was ok. Nothing stellar, but at least one fun highlight, Steven Soderbergh’s ridiculous and zany “The Informant!” which isn’t essential Soderbergh, but pretty deliciously absurdist.

The Venice Film Festival awards are in, but don’t expect for too many names you’ll recognize. Shut out of all awards were films like Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story,” and John Hillcoat’s “The Road,” which would have helped combat some of the negative buzz.

The major American “mainstream” (very relative) film to win an award was Todd Solondz’s “Life During Wartime” which won the Best Screenplay award. We just showed you some footage from it yesterday.

The Toronto International Film Festival obviously has a slew of new footage, trailers, posters and synopses from their various films so we thought we’d point out some new ones we noticed from films that should be on your radar.

First up is “Dogtooth”, one of our 10 Most Anticipated Films from Cannes that we missed and which won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival earlier this year.

The 66th annual Venice Film festival has been unveiled and it looks like Variety’s early trade report was almost completely on-the-mark.

Practically every major film they said was hoping to play at the festival is there including new world premieres for pictures by Werner Herzog, Michael Moore, Todd Solondz and John Hillcoat. But note, one film they were off on is the Coen brothers’ “A Serious Man. ” The picture is making its world debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival.

What happened to venerable Turkish director Fatih Akin’s (the beautiful “The Edge Of Heaven”) “Soul Kitchen” which was hotly tipped to appear at Cannes, but failed to make the cut for yesterday’s Cannes line up?

Apparently, it’s simply because the film wasn’t ready. The film, which stars Moritz Bleibtreu (“Run Lola Run”) and Birol Ünel (who starred in Akin’s excellent 2004 film, “Head On”) is evidently still currently being cut which meant it couldn’t make the deadline for Cannes.
