Be it slashers, possession movies, or curses like “It Follows,” teen horror endures in its many iterations. And a new high school horror movie on the way from Black Bear sounds like a fresh take on the premise of David Robert Mitchell‘s 2014 film. Deadline reports that “Whistle” will start production soon in Ontario, Canada, with “Logan” actress Dafne Keen and “Yellowjackets” star Sophie Nélisse leading the cast.

With a show like “Yellowjackets,” where the mysteries are everything, you can’t reveal too much too soon. David Lynch and Mark Frost learned that lesson with “Twin Peaks,” a clear inspiration for Showtimes‘s hit series in terms of tone and setting, which solved its central question halfway through its second season and then quickly faltered for the remaining episodes (until, of course, the divine “The Return,” two decades later, which defied all conventions).

Co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson said they envisioned their Showtime hit as a five-season series, and so far they are doing an excellent job of keeping up the momentum while also keeping the show as wild and weird as possible.

If this bodyguard thriller were direct-to-VOD, rather than Netflix, it’s the kind of film that we’d expect Steven Seagal to lead, playing the gruff security expert who softens in the presence of his young charge. But this is Netflix – which is pretty legit most of the time – and instead of Seagal and his ponytail, we get Noomi Rapace and her bun. “Close” is better than late-period Seagal from every angle, but it’s still a largely forgettable action movie that will likely get lost in the sea of original titles added to Netflix each month and will fade from memory if you do stumble upon it and press play.
