Even after the good folks at Fox skullfucked the continuity of one of their prized franchises, they seemed adamant about making these demented square pegs fit. Bleeding Cool begs to differ, sharing what they’ve learned about a crucial sequence for “X-Men First Class” that borrows liberally from the opening moments of 2000’s “X-Men.”

In Bryan Singer’s original film, many remember the initial moments of Erik Lensherr, the boy who would be Magneto. He is taken by SS soldiers to be lorded over in a concentration camp and separated from his family in WWII Poland.

Garth Jennings is better known to most folks as one half (along with Nick Goldsmith) of the music video and commercial directing duo, Hammer & Tongs. The team has made celebrated ads and music videos for years, including works for Blur, R.E.M., Fatboy Slim and Radiohead. The team has also wet their feet with feature films with Jennings directing and Goldsmith producing. Their first venture was the ill-advised adaptation of “Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy” in 2005 and it was followed a couple of years later with low key charmer, “Son Of Rambow.”

Since then, the team has put their head down and continued their work on music videos and ads, but Jennings took a time out to speak with Pitchfork about Hammer & Tongs’ videos for Vampire Weekend and some film projects they hope to get off the ground.

Whenever awards bodies such as the British Independent Film Awards release their nominations, I have no choice but to question where ‘independent’ factor comes into play. Nevertheless, their thoughtful championing of the underdog(s) year in and year out is reason enough to let such thoughts slip. This year, Mike Leigh’s disarming “Happy-Go-Lucky” received a paltry 3 nominations, same as James Marsh’s highly regarded doc “Man on Wire” and Mark Herman’s so-so “The Boy in Striped Pyjamas” (in which I found Vera Farmiga excellent, and she received a Best Actress nom here too), while “Son of Rambow,” “Somers Town” and “The Duchess” snatched 4 apiece, which is laughable if only because Leigh’s film is so obviously a shutout.

The L.A. Times points out that Sylvester Stallone is down with the affectionate “First Blood” homage (or jumping off point) of the new British kids movie “Son of Rambow” (purposely misspelled, they are kids after all).

Sly apparently initially assumed the film would be just a mocking send-up of his inaugural Rambo movie.

“When I first heard . . . I assumed it was going to be a very broad and stylized joke-a-minute comedy at Rambo’s expense,” Stallone told the Times via e-mail.

Have you heard about or seen the trailer for the film, “Son of Rambow“? It comes out this weekend in limited release and wish we had time to write about it earlier. First off, it looks completely endearing (and was a big hit at the most recent Sundance Film Festival).

It’s a coming-of-age story (but with kids, not bratty teens) set in the ’80s about two friends who bond over their love for “Rambo: First Blood” who then set out to make their own movie inspired by Sly Stalllone’s Vietnam-vet gone bonkers in normal society action franchise.
