“Solos” is one of those projects that historians will look at years from now and instantly recognize as a COVID-19 production. One or two actors performing in one closed set and a short story that finds them mostly speaking to themselves or, in some cases, other versions of themselves. And, despite the participation of Helen Mirren, Anthony Mackie, Constance Wu, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, and Uzo Aduba, among others, it suffers the worst sin; it’s simply a bore.

Producer/creator David Weil (the writer behind the controversial “Hunters”) returns to Amazon Prime with this week’s “Solos,” a pandemic production filmed in late 2020 that wastes so much talent that it can be almost hard to comprehend how this many award winners fell victim to its thin ideas and manipulative melodrama. They must have been sick. At the beginning of the pandemic, a clip of celebrities singing “Imagine” was widely criticized for feeling like a tone-deaf representation of where the world was at the time.

Amazon’s new anthology series, “Solos,” is simple in that it explores human connection. “A lot of the inspiration for [it] came from things I’m not allowed to do as a writer,” creator David Weil (“Hunters“) told EW recently. “In film and television, you’re really not allowed to have a 30-minute monologue, though I would love to in every episode of something I write.”

After months of bare TV release schedules, May shows a return to form with plenty of new and returning series. While streaming services still monopolize many of the more popular releases, series such as “Pose,” returning for its final season, and “The Girlfriend Experience” offer a return to form for network television.

While May will be the first in months to not offer a new high profile Marvel series for event TV watching, Disney+ is filling the voice with the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” spinoff “Star Wars: The Bad Batch.” Elsewhere, there’s the return of 2020 under the radar favorites such as Apple TV+ comedy “Mythic Quest.” Most exciting however is the latest from director Barry Jenkins as he returns to the world of television with the highly anticipated adaptation of the best-selling novel “The Underground Railroad.”

A couple of months ago, Amazon announced plans for a new anthology series from the creator of “Hunters.” The series, titled “Solos,” features an all-star cast and is expected to be one of the most anticipated titles coming to the Prime Video streaming service this year. And in a series of first-look photos (via EW), the star power of “Solos” is pretty unbelievable.

While not a whole lot is known about “Solos,” we know the series showcases eight separate stories featuring one character in a room, as the show explores the depths of human connection.

According to Deadline, Amazon has landed a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba, Nicole Beharie, Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, and Constance Wu to star in the upcoming series, “Solos.” The series comes from creator David Weil, who is the man behind the recent hit drama, “Hunters.” “Solos” aims to tell the story of human connection through seven episodes that take place from a different point of view and time period, but somehow all show that we are all connected through the human experience.
