As was the case for film, July is a bit of a mixed bag for television in terms of genre and types of series being released. There are three adult animated series, one of which is a sequel and the others spinoffs. It’s a big month for Apple TV+ as the streamer is poised to premiere four new original series, while other services, such as Netflix, are more focused on reality television.

The second season of TNT’s “Snowpiercer” improves on the lackluster first year by giving the show a much-needed antagonist and opening it up in terms of world-building and depth of character. Having said that, it still succumbs to a serious midseason sag in terms of momentum and increasingly feels like a transitional piece of the track in terms of the entire arc of this show, playing with themes that it won’t really be exploring until a third or maybe even fourth season.

Film director Scott Derrickson has his footprint all over the Hollywood horror genre. “The Exorcism of Emily Rose“, and “Sinister” are among the many successful films on his resume. He added a flare of horror and talks of a multiverse to Marvel with “Doctor Strange,” and has worked on a few TV pilots from Hulu’s version of “Locke & Key” to the original pilot for “TNT’s Snowpiercer.”

And it appears that art mimics reality from time to time, especially in the case of the forthcoming “Snowpiercer” TV series, as the as-yet-unreleased show has gone around one big, painstaking loop to arrive back where it all began, and we’re not sure if it is even worth it.
