As this weekend approached, box office analysts predicted that the #1 spot would be a battle between the animated threequel “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” and Dwayne Johnson’s “Die Hard” knock-off, “Skyscraper.” While ‘Hotel Transylvania’ did what was expected, “Skyscraper” ended up burning to the ground, so to speak.

Coming in at #1, surprising no one, is ‘Hotel Transylvania 3,’ with a weekend total of $44.1 million.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a franchise unto himself, churning out movies that are sometimes remakes, but even when they’re not, serve up highly familiar plots tailored to the Rock’s physical (considerable) and theatrical (sometimes limited) abilities. The Rock plays essentially the same character every time, but he’s pretty good at it; there’s rarely any pretense that he’s not the hero and he displays just enough humor and personality to leaven the outrageous action sequences the audience is there for.

If the new trailer for “Skyscraper” is anything to go by, there’s a real chance that we’ll be looking back on “Rampage” as only the second-silliest Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson blockbuster of 2018. That’s no putdown, mind you. If the upcoming action-disaster film can match the goofy thrills and over-the-top spectacle of Johnson’s “Fast and Furious” films then audiences and studios alike will be tickled pink.
