Jeremy Irons Latest Addition To All-Star ‘Margin Call’ Cast

Close to two years after the collapse of Lehmann Brothers, Hollywood is starting to respond to the financial crisis that shook the world at the end of 2008. Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” hits in September after middling reviews at Cannes, and a handful of other projects, from HBO’s “Too Big To Fail” to an adaptation of the stage play “Enron” are all in the works. But one of the most promising is the drama “Margin Call.”

The picture, which is currently filming, follows eight people at a financial firm during the first 24 hours of the crisis, and already has a promising cast on board, including Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci, Mary McDonnell and Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl,” apparently).

Financial Crisis Drama ‘Margin Call’ Adds Simon Baker & Paul Bettany

While it might not necessarily be an A-list cast, per se, nor certainly the most exciting topic on the whole planet (hey, they got it green lit, that’s all that matters), the cast for the financial crisis indie drama, “Margin Call” — there’s a sexy title — already boasts a pretty respectable cast that already includes Kevin Spacey, Carla Gugino, Stanley Tucci and Zachary Quinto.

And now two more actors have joined: “The Mentalist” TV star Simon Baker and actor turned horrible-action-her0 (with painful results) Paul Bettany.

‘Agora,’ ‘The Killer Inside Me’ & ‘Life During Wartime’ Get Summer Release Dates

For those of you looking for a bit of a reprieve from the onslaught of CGI at the multiplex this summer, your local arthouse just might have the fix you’re looking for as release dates for three highly anticipated films have been slotted for the hazy, lazy days of summer.

First up, Alejandro Amenábar’s “Agora” has been penciled in for a May 28th release by Newmarket Films. The film, which got a tepid reception at Cannes last year though became a smash hit in Spain, stars Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella and depicts Hypatia’s struggle to save the wisdom of the ancient world while embroiled in a love triangle.

Here is your first look at Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me” courtesy of a few pap snaps taken during the film’s production.

Based on a Jim Thompson novel — the author who co-wrote Stanley Kubrick’s classic-heist-caper “The Killing” — “The Killer Inside Me” is set in the 1950’s and centers on a West Texas sheriff, played by Casey Affleck, on his downward spiral from a boring small-town cop into a ruthless, sociopathic murderer trying to cement his innocence when the evidence looks suspicious.

Yup, it’s true, the Criterion Collection will release Ang Lee’s apparently overlooked 1999 American Civil War drama “Ride With The Devil,” in May of 2010 according to Anne Thompson. So yes, if you were ever curious how far in advance the often-mysterious operating Criterion Collection schedules their DVD releases, well it now appears like almost a year away, if not more (we don’t know what else they obviously have in store).

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s (“Bad Santa”) “I Love You Phillip Morris” has been acquired by Consolidated Pictures Group for domestic distribution. The film stars Jim Carrey as a married conman who falls in love with his cellmate, played by Ewan McGregor. It will screen at the Directors’ Fortnight offering at Cannes and has reportedly been given a 2010 Valentine’s Day release, which is interesting to say the least. [Variety]

Rachel Weisz has been loosely attached to play iconic actress Hedy Lamarr in Amy Redford’s indie tale “Face Value.” The film will center on Lamarr’s eccentric life, with a particular focus on her less-publicized second career as a scientist which saw her help create a method of changing frequencies that would be instrumental in modern wireless communications.
