Sony is really taking a beating with its Spider-Man universe of late. While the “Spider-Man” movies produced by Marvel are still gigantic mega-hits and the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ movies are critically acclaimed blockbusters (the first one won the Best Animated Feature Oscar), the rest of their SSMU (Sony’s Spider-Man Universe) woefully lags behind. “Morbius” was 2022’s superhero laughingstock, and “Madame Web” appears as if it will be 2024’s version (the film opened to a paltry $25.8 million this weekend and was a huge critical dud).

If it’s not completely obvious by now, Sony is getting extremely aggressive about leveraging their ‘Spider-Man’ Spider-Verse (officially known as Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters, rolls right off the tongue, I know). They don’t have as much to work with as Marvel—Sony only owns the characters within Spider-Man’s sub-universe—thus everything is Spider-centric and potentially not as diverse as you’d like with your superheroes. Not to be outdone by Warner Bros. and DC films, Sony is starting to collect quite a few officially unannounced superhero films that fill up their Spider-verse. The company who owns the rights to Spider–Man, but allows Marvel Studios to use that character for their ‘Avengers’ flicks, is looking to expand their superhero universe by tapping into the plethora of Spider-Man side characters.
