Scorsese’s ‘Shine A Light’ Not Bad For An Overly Long Live Doc With Many Old People Close-Ups

While watching Martin Scorsese’s “Shine A Light” documentary/glorified live concert we realized the entire problem with the Boomer generation is one of viable sexuality. The thing that makes the Rolling Stones still touring so much more abhorrent than, say, The Who or Paul McCartney, is that a large portion of their greatest hits are about fucking.

Most of us have no desire to hear “Let’s Spend the Night Together” from a shirtless 65 year old man, even if he is in amazing shape.

No Foolin’, Aged Rolling Stones Release Shine A Light Soundtrack For April 1

You’ve probably heard of this little Rolling Stones live concert documentary directed by Marty Scorsese, “Shine A Light.”

We mentioned the long-list of songs the Stones played during their two-night 2006 Beacon Theater New York shows that were under consideration for use on the soundtrack and now the Shine A Light Original Soundtrack deets have been unveiled (along with the artwork; amusingly enough the TBD soundtrack listing was not very disimilar to the final one).

Scorsese To Direct Bob Marley Documentary For His 65th Birthday

Maybe it’s time to officially christen him the new rock director (or at least documentary rock ace). While he’s always flirted with rock music in his movies, Marty Scorsese apparently plans to live out the winter of his career making documentaries on iconic rock figures.

After completing documentaries on Bob Dylan (“No Direction Home”) the Rolling Stones (“Shine A Light“) and an upcoming untitled doc about “quiet” Beatle George Harrison, what’s subject will the estimable filmmaker tackle for an encore?

Rolling Stones Soundtrack TBD Tracklist; DVD Set For July 1

While there’s no date for the Rolling Stone Shine A Light soundtrack disc yet, a list of songs shot in the film under consideration have been released. Also, the “Shine A Light” film is evidently already being scheduled for a July 1 release according to a press release about the film.

The film that just had its big debut in Berlin is all the press rage at the moment (or at least for the next 24 hours).It features special guests in Buddy Guy, White Stripes’ Jack White and Christine Aguilera joining the Stones onstage.

The title of Sonic Youth’s seminal avante-noise alt-rock record Daydream Nation, has been appropriated and appropriated by a Hayden Panettiere film vehicle no less. Kieran Culkin is also in talks to star in the film that has nothing to do with the downtown New York noiseniks. No they can’t sue. Titles are not copywritable in the United States. [Variety]

The documentary “Kurt Cobain: About a Son,” is coming out on DVD February 19 via ShoutFactory.

SXSW Film Festival Announces Full Schedule; ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall,’ ‘Shine A Light’ Among New Films

The SXSW Film Festival running March 7-15 in Austin, Texas just announced its full line-up late last night.

Newly announced additions to the festival include the Judd Apatow produced comedy, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” written and starring Freak & Geeks alumni Jason Segel, Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stone live concert, “Shine A Light,” Kimberley Peirce’s long-awaited follow-up to “Boys Don’t Cry,” the post-Iraq war film, “Stop Loss,” and Morgan Spurlock’s new documenatary “Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?”

Other newly announced films include the Sundance-buzzed documentary, “American Teen,”the Money Mark-scored indie/DIY artists film, “Beautiful Losers,” “Lou Reed‘s Berlin” (directed by the Oscar-nominated Julian Schnabel), VICE’s much-hyped “Heavy Metal In Baghdad” and the titular post-punk Manchester band documentary, “Joy Division.”

Other music related documentaries include the computer-geek hip-hop film, “Nerdcore Rising,” the learning disability-challenged punk outfit doc, “Heavy Load,” 8-bit video game-tweaked music subculture, “Blip Festival: Reformat the Planet,” the Bela Fleck chronicle, “Throw Down Your Heart” the dub maestro story, “The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee “Scratch” Perry,” the tale of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound crack team, “The Wrecking Crew,” and a look at deceased homeless mental patient, “Wesley Willis’s Joyrides.”

Previously announced films include Harmony Korine’s “Mister Lonely,” starring Diego Luna and Samantha Morton as Micheal Jackson and Marilyn Monroe impersonators (scored by Spritualized’s Jason Pierce and the Sun City Girls); “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” “The Battle Of Seattle” which features Outkast’s Andre 3000 among an ensemble cast and “The Assassination of A High School President” (with a Polyphonic Spree score).

If Marty Scorsese suddenly fell out of touch would the world go topsy-turvy? Ok, arguably, during the “Kundun” – “Bringing Out The Dead” phase he was greatly out of touch, but a contemporary tour documentary on the decrepit Rolling Stones, now? Discuss. We would have much rather seen a “No Direction Home“-like retrospective. Oh well. Indie -kids looking for some sort of hip association will be pleased to note that the White Stripes’ Jack White makes a guest appearance.

Strummer Gets November Release; Biggie Gets Unknown; “Dedicated” Soundtrack (Mostly) Finalized

The North American rights to Julien Temple’s documentary, “Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten” has been acquired by IFC. The film will finally get a proper U.S. release date on November 2. The soundtrack, which we already wrote about, has been out for months features 20 music tracks including three previously unreleased Clash tracks (demos) and an unreleased version of reggae classic, “Natty Rebel” by dubmaster U-Roy, among other tracks influential to the late Strummer (Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan; the rest of the tracks are audio excerpts from the film).
