The answer, if you’re Robert Downey, Jr., is simple—you don’t. You take something as simple as “Sherlock Holmes” and you infuse that Marvel Studios formula into its DNA and you create your own damn universe.

Jared Harris To Play Moriarty In ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’

Ok, something about this doesn’t seem right, but Latino Review are reporting that Jared Harris (“Mad Men,” “I Shot Andy Warhol,” “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button”) has landed the villainous role of Moriarty in “Sherlock Holmes 2.”

The announcement is a bit of surprise considering the heavyweight names like Daniel Day-Lewis , Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt that have been thrown around over the past little while, and seems like a big step down from the A-list where Warner Bros.

One of the more pleasant surprises of last year was when Guy Ritchie’s take on “Sherlock Holmes,” a film we were actively dreading, turned out to be very good indeed: respectful of the character and history, but with enough thrills and spills to let it connect with a contemporary audience, and with the central pairing creating enough chemistry to sustain a franchise. Warner Bros. have been moving full-steam ahead on the sequel all year, with director Ritchie, Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law all set to return for a plot that’ll see the detective heroes battle their nemesis Moriarty across Europe.

Looks like those high-profile Hollywood meetings Noomi Rapace took a few weeks ago have panned out. She’s already reportedly lining up a gig alongside Jeremy Renner in “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” from director Tommy Wirkola (whose Nazi zombie horror comedy “Dead Snow,” turned heads in 2009) and now she’s landed another coveted gig.

The on-the-rise Swedish actress and original ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,’ has landed the lead female role in Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes 2” opposite Robert Downey Jr.

Martin Freeman Is First Choice For ‘The Hobbit’; Studios Trying To Accomodate Actor’s ‘Sherlock’ Schedule

When we reported yesterday on the rumor in the notoriously unreliable British tabloid The Sun that “The Office” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” star Martin Freeman had turned down the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit,” due to a clash with the second series of the BBC TV series “Sherlock,” we wrote that, while we were skeptical, even “a stopped clock is right twice a day.”

Well, it looks like this is one of those times, as EW, whose track record is much stronger, are reporting that not only was the report true, but that there’s still hope that Freeman might take on the role: New Line and MGM (the latter presumably dressed in sackcloth) have gone back to Freeman with a revised offer, offering to fit the shooting schedule for the two films around Freeman so that the actor can fulfill his commitments to “Sherlock,” and still fit in the marathon shoot for the “Lord of the Rings” prequel.

That guy from “Swingers” is now that director of “Iron Man.” Jon Favreau’s career has taken some interesting twists over the past decade-plus, but mostly in impressive directions. Besides being a solid director and occasional actor, the affable Favreau is just someone actors want to work with, which explains his ability to lure the elite of Hollywood into just about every project he directs. Favreau’s “Iron Man” was originally set to star in “Cowboys & Aliens,” but when that didn’t work out, his sub wasn’t too shabby either.

Jude Law Says ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ Will Shoot In October

A small update from Jude Law on “Sherlock Holmes 2.” Nothing to get super excited about, really.

We know the Guy Ritchie-directed sequel is already set for a December 16, 2011 release, so shooting has to start relatively soon. Last we heard, the film would shoot in late summer or early fall and it looks like they’re still slightly chipping away at the script — written by the unlikely duo of Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney (“Paper Man”) — because Law told Empire, they’re eyeing an October start date (arguably October is early fall and nothing has changed time table wise).
