After all, Adams wasn’t always enjoying the kinds of starry, awards-friendly roles she is now more or less synonymous with. For some time, Adams was competing for screentime with male co-stars who happened to be comedy icons (“Talladega Nights”) and getting cast in such illustrious parts like “Gorgeous Woman” in mid-tier farces (“Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny”).

When considering the Emmy nomination races this year, there are a lot of insanely competitive categories we already know of. Limited Series is a wealth of riches. Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Mini-Series or Movie are so packed they will likely provide a ton of our snubs and surprises candidates. That being said, it all really comes down to this: Will the Television Academy embrace “Fleabag” or not?

Moore received hers at the opening ceremony last week, and Clarkson will be honored at the closing ceremony tomorrow. The former sat down with the media for a press conference (broadcast on Czech television, no less) to discuss her career and other honors potentially down the road.

The true differentiator, however, may come from the Television Academy’s performer peer group. “When They See Us” earned an eye-popping eight acting nominations whereas “Chernobyl” landed just three. That difference in support could be what pushes the DuVernay’s Netflix decades-spanning drama over the top.

The USC Scripter Award is given to both the original author and the screenwriter of the adapted work. This year’s film nominees include “Black Panther,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” “The Death of Stalin,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Leave No Trace.” That differentiates from the WGA Awards who honored “BlacKkKlansman” and “A Star is Born” over “Leave No Trace” and “Death of Stalin.” The BAFTA Awards nominations lined up with the WGA except that instead of nominating “Black Panther” the Brits recognized “First Man.” So, with the USC honors announced there are still eight films in the mix for five Oscar slots.

It was perhaps a less great one on TV, at least on the surface. There were more scripted shows than ever once again, but with some heavy-hitters skipping a year, and a few high-profile disappointments (Hi, “The Romanoffs!”), it was hard not to feel that the ageless TV vs. film debate came out of 2018 with a point on the movies board.

Everyone’s ornery as we sprint to make those deadlines, but before we declare war on one another, remember we still have inspiring and movie music to celebrate and soothe us. In crafting this piece over the years – Best Soundtracks and Scores – we’ve discovered it’s one of the most soothing, one of the best balms of the end of the year.

Familiar titles such as “The Americans,” “Better Call Saul,” “The Crown,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” all earned nods in their respective categories. It was the new shows that were recognized and those that were not that continue to intrigue.

Well, unless you’re Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. or Annapurna Pictures. If you’re Disney it’s pretty much a great morning especially when you take into account the success of future acquisition Fox Searchlight this rainy LA morning, too.

Now, it goes without saying that the HFPA is a curious bunch. International “journalists” (granted, a few are quite reputable) that have different conflicting agendas and, arguably, barely watch enough television to actually hand out awards in those categories.

Impressively, Gillian Flynn hasn’t turned into a one-screenplay hit wonder. The former television critic made her name as a novelist, but when she adapted her own novel “Gone Girl” into a movie she earned Golden Globe, WGA and BAFTA Awards nominations, among other honors. 2018 has proved her talent for filmed content wasn’t limited to one thriller.

Earlier this summer she adapted another one of her novels, “Sharp Objects,” into a celebrated HBO mini-series starring Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson.

She turned heads as a writer with the New York Times Best Seller “Gone Girl.” In 2014, she impressively pulled double duty, adapting her novel for the screen for David Fincher to direct and Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, and Neil Patrick Harris to star in. And Flynn did such a fine job with that script, “Gone Girl” earned her a Golden Globe” nomination for Best Screenplay.

However, for those of us old enough to remember the days of summertime re-runs, even having one or two (or eight, like we do) new quality series to pass the time with is a luxury. Luckily, quality over quantity prevails, and there are some gems to enjoy this month while chilling by the pool. Check out July’s top television premieres:

Flynn’s novels have made a point of showing the dark and complex side of women, most famously shown in the 2014 film “Gone Girl.” “Sharp Objects” is widely considered Flynn’s edgiest story and the official plot synopsis sheds a little light on why.

As smart and perceptive as her most significant hit “Gone Girl” was, in terms of sheer terror, her debut novel “Sharp Objects” takes the cake. It’s now coming to HBO this summer as an eight-episode series developed by Marti Noxon (UnREAL) and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies,” “Dallas Buyers Club”).

Back at the start of December, we ran down the 100 films that we’re most looking forward to across 2018, and we picked out some festival favorites that we’ve already seen and know are worth checking out too. But even with 250 hours worth or so of promising art and entertainment, that barely scratches the surface of what people will be talking about in terms of moving images, because, well, we don’t know if you heard, but TV’s gotten really good.

Now, her debut book “Sharp Objects” is getting the limited series treatment, and the first look has arrived.

As you would expect from an HBO production, the talent is stacked on this one, with Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies“) behind the camera, while Amy Adams leads the cast.
