Earlier this month we reported that the Weinstein Company were finally going to release Mikael Håfström’s long delayed WWII set drama “Shanghai” this June — in China.

There has been no word yet on why the film, which wrapped way back in August 2008, and was officially booted from The Weinstein Company’s release schedule last fall, has been continually delayed but clearly it’s a film the studio has high hopes for and watching the international trailer, which has just landed online, it’s easy to see why.

Stuck on The Weinstein Company shelf for nearly two years, Mikael Hafstrom’s WWII drama “Shanghai” will finally be released….in China. The irony is a bit rich considering China blocked filming in the country after the production had spent nearly $3 million constructing sets. The production then moved to London and Bangkok where filming was completed.

The film stars John Cusack, Chow Yun-fat, Gong Li and Ken Watanabe and is “about an American intelligence official who investigates a friend’s death in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in the months before the attack on Pearl Harbor.” While there is no official word on why the film, which wrapped in August of 2008, has taken so long to be released, someone close to the production has said editing proved to be difficult as Hafstrom had to work with “visually different footage” (yeah, we don’t know what that means either) from London and Bangkok, and apparently quite a few composers have gone through the turnstiles as well.

As we noted last week, the upcoming slate of films from The Weinstein Company was notably missing two projects that have been on the radar for sometime: “Shanghai,” the period piece set in 1940s China, from “1408” director Mikael Hafstrom starring John Cusack, and “Hoodwinked Too!” the sequel to the animated hit “Hoodwinked, the True Story of Little Red Riding Hood,” which came out in 2005. The Weinsteins have lately been playing hide-and-seek with release dates, to the detriment of some projects that end up sitting around for much longer than they need to, and the producers of “Hoodwinked” at Kanbar Entertainment have taken umbrage with their project being tossed around– filing suit against TWC for breach of contact in pushing back the planned January 15th release date, as reported by Variety.

After “Inglourious Basterds” netted an impressive opening weekend haul (especially for a slap-stick revisionist history thriller) and “Halloween II” is tracking extremely well for this weekend (even without, ahem, critical approval), everyone seems to be shouting from the rooftops that The Weinstein Company is saved. Maybe not so fast?

We just got an email today, with a priority rating of “high,” stating that “Shanghai,” the forthcoming TWC historical epic that reunites John Cusack with his “1408” director Mikael Håfström, has been bumped from its original date of September 4th to an as-yet-undisclosed time.

Andrew Jarecki’s “All Good Things,” might be the unwanted step-child on the Weinstein Company roster and has seen about four release date bumps this year.

Then again, it might be all just due to TWC’s financial issues. The film was originally scheduled for the spring, was bumped into summer and then was said to bow in the fall. Now according to Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB and Wiki, the film has a December 11 release date.

Sharon Waxman over at The Wrap has written another doomsday piece about the Weinstein Company, the type that were pretty prevalent last year when “The Reader” was threatening to be a nonstarter. Essentially, there are whispers that the Weinsteins have run through their entire $1.2 billion loan given to them at the start of their company, without a single real hit movie to show for it. Rumors suggest it’s gotten so bad that the company, currently debuting their pricey co-production at Cannes “Inglorious Basterds,” might not have enough capital to promote and release the shelved Michael Cera comedy “Youth In Revolt.”

Are these predictions premature?

With the Weinstein Co. having such a turbulent year, and money woes certainly on the horizon, the production company has decided to bump all of its major releases, save “The Reader” and “Zach and Miri Make a Porno” to 2009.

We have already expressed our disappointment that the Viggo Mortensen-starring adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” has been bumped out of Oscar contention and into 2009. Now it appears that they have done the same with the already-delayed”Fanboys,” the Harrison Ford and Sean Penn-starring drama “Crossing Over,” the John Cusack vehicle “Shanghai,” and the Mickey Rourke-starring “Killshot” which has has numerous release dates over the past few years.
