As many, but not all suspected, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy & The Heron” won the Best Animated Feature Film at the Academy Awards ceremony last night. Largely beloved by critics and audiences, many rejoiced in the win of Miyazaki’s third Oscar when you count his 2015 Honorary Award. However, one of the actors from a rival nominated film wasn’t thrilled about the win. Actor Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales in “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,” took to social media to voice his displeasure with the outcome to his followers and fans.

To begin with an unfortunate hot take, Baz Luhrmann‘s cinematic vocabulary doesn’t include subtlety. For the Aussie director, every moment of drama must become glaring melodrama, color must explode off the screen, music is grandiose, and fabulous fireworks are de rigueur. The goal, of course, is in-your-face emotion, but amplification often causes distortion rather than ardent feeling. For better or worse, this is Luhrmann’s voice and at the very least, it’s a signature that’s unmistakably his.

The show is at its best when he’s behind the camera, but he’s still a presence in each scene in the role of co-creator with Guirgis.
