She has seven nominations under her belt, with the most recent one being in 2019 for her performance in “The Wife.” But Close has yet to land the actual trophy. This year, many expect her to get another nomination for “Hillbilly Elegy,” with some positing that she might win this time as a sort of career acknowledgment.

To watch a movie is to feel through others, to experience lives and cultures beyond your own or, sometimes, to relate in ways you never could before. The best films invite you to love and care, to believe you’re close to strangers and nestle inside their thoughts, their laughs, their sorrows and their pains. To watch a movie is to become someone else, if for a fleeting moment.

It’s sappy and corny to say as much, but that’s the same with Valentine’s Day.

Round about 2003/2004, if you’d told those of us who were unlucky enough to see the now-forgotten Leeds indie band 10,000 Things, that the band’s frontman would become a genuine, fully-fledged movie star, we’d have laughed in your face, and had you swiftly committed to an asylum. But after his acclaimed turn as Ian Curtis in “Control,” Sam Riley has managed to graduate from post-Libertines no-hoper to honest-to-god leading man, with a brace of films on the way, including “Brighton Rock,” which premieres tonight at Toronto, the crime-thriller “13,” and a much-sought-after role in Walter Salles’ “On The Road.”

After that film, which is currently shooting, Riley will return to the U.K.

Entertainment Weekly recalls Oscars from Zellweger, “Shakespeare in Love,” Coburn and more…

Since it’s Oscar season and any worthwhile publication knows to offer something more than just annual predictions (if they in fact know what’s good for them), Entertainment Weekly created the “Recall the Gold” project. Seemingly designed to stir up calls of “blasphemy!” and “damn straight!” in equal parts, the project involved sending out re-do ballots to a handful of actors, agents, directors, industry people, etc., asking them to offer up their picks for best acting, directing and picture awards for every fifth Oscar ceremony within the last 25 years.

Moving out of our wheelhouse for a sec: You know when girls are gorgeous, but insecure and you want to shake them and go, “honey, puulllease.” This is what we want to do with the adorable Gwyneth Paltrow who we’ve always had a soft spot for. She’s always been a strong actor, articulated, smart, thoughtful and seemingly a head-on-her-shoulders type gal which we appreciate.

But have you seen her lately? She’s apparently going through a 30-something, “I’m a Mom, now” crisis and Defamer has been on Gwyneth-watch of late and done a bang-up job (and a funny one) of covering her every move – moves that seem to reveal less and less clothing and rather tarty choices in fashion (from outrageous hooker heels to skirts as long as a headband).
