Of course you do, it’s a stone cold classic even if it is relatively straightforward compared to Glazer’s latter day more enigmatic masterpieces like “Under the Skin” (2013), and “The Zone of Interest” (the latter of which we named the Best Film of 2023).

Well, Paramount+ is hoping you haven’t forgotten the film, as the network has found the cast that will lead the prequel series that the streamer is working on now.

And over that time, all signs have pointed to the series actually getting made, with Paramount Network ordering an entire first season. In fact, it was reported that Karyn Kusama, of “The Invitation” fame, was set to direct episodes of the series. Alas, it appears that this was all truly too good to be true, as the “Sexy Beast” series is now without a deal and a platform.

The absolutely tremendous car-chase-musical (read our review) is funny, sure, but that’s not its primary aim: in a big departure from Wright, it has more in common with classic 70s crime cinema than with, “Hot Fuzz” (for example) using the director’s formal gifts in service of a surprisingly hard-boiled heist movie.

We’re taught from such a young age to abstain from using profane language that the desire to use it becomes almost inherent the older we get. An f-bomb here, a slip of the tongue there, these words have been cultivated to be an important part of our modern day vernacular, no matter how taboo they’ve been considered historically.

In film, swear words are the difference between a PG-13 or an R-rating; they’re the unforgettable final line muttered by a scorned Rhett Butler in “Gone With The Wind,” or in a whirlwind performance by Ben Kingsley in Jonathan Glazer‘s terrific “Sexy Beast.” In a new video essay from Now You See It, we learn more about the aesthetics of cursing in film.

Crime stories have a long and celebrated lineage in film. Like horror, it’s a fun, but often disappointing genre. You have to wade through a lot of shit to get to the gold. But when they’re good, they’re really good. Great modern gangster films – the past decade has seen some bona fide new classics with “The Pusher Trilogy,” “City of God,” “Gomorrah,” “A Prophet” and even the recent “Animal Kingdom” – transcend and twist the genre, revitalizing what was once rote.

French writer/director Jacques Audiard has leapt onto the world stage in a big way in the past few years with the double whammy of “The Beat That My Heart Skipped” and the Oscar-contending gangster epic “A Prophet.” He’s wasting no time in cashing in those chips and has a couple of potential projects on the horizon.

First up is the latest from Louis Mellis, co-writer of Jonathan Glazer’s modern classic “Sexy Beast.” For a long time we didn’t hear anything from Mellis and his writing partner David Scinto.

Yesterday you read our Best Films of 200o. Today, on to 2001…

What was the state of cinema? Oscar-wise, in 2001 the Academy Awards made some bold nominations, but of course awarded the safer “Gladiator” before Steven Soderbergh’s far superior, “Traffic.” Still, Soderbergh did pull off the feat of being nominated twice in the same directorial category for his drug trade drama and “Erin Brockovich” (he would win for “Traffic” and Julia Roberts would take Best Actress for ‘Brockovich).

Since their debut on the staggeringly good “Sexy Beast,” writers Louis Mellis and David Scinto have been more or less absent from the film world — Mellis is one of half-a-dozen credited writers on the messy comic-book Western “Blueberry,” and they were developing sci-fi novel “Jennifer Government” for Steven Soderbergh, but nothing’s been produced. Nothing, that is, until “44 Inch Chest,” which sees the writers teaming with photographer and director Malcolm Venville, who, like “Sexy Beast” helmer Jonathan Glazer, comes from the world of commercials.

We’ve gone on about this one a few times — the new Jonathan Glazer (“Sexy Beast”) directed short film/video for Dead Weather’s new single — and it debuted on Cinemax this weekend, but we gotta say, the anticipation build-up was better than the real thing. This is a bit of a let down. As Vulture writes, the clip features, “Alison Mosshart (day job: singing for the Kills) walk toward [Jack White of the White Stripes], unloading automatic weapons into each other’s faces and chests in what’s almost certainly meant to be some sort of metaphor about relationships or something.” Meh, the track isn’t all that either.
