Considering he’s one of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century, it’s surprising that Bob Marley has never really been depicted on the big screen. A 1984 documentary for the BBC, “Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Bob Marley Story” is more-or-less the only version to date, although a pair of dueling versions have been in development for a few years now.

Martin Scorsese was working on a documentary for the Weinstein Company, initially announced two years ago, although he swiftly bowed out, to be replaced by Jonathan Demme.

Continuing their slide from once relevant garage pop band to mall punk morons, Weezer have written a new (and probably terrible) song for “Shrek Forever After.” Our only hope is that some kid manages to discover Pinkerton as a result.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the North American rights to Sylvain Chomet’s sophomore animation feature “The Illusionist.” The director earned considerable acclaim for his debut “The Triplets Of Belleville,” and his followup about a magician who tries to remain relevant in the age of rock ‘n roll looks to do the same.

In the history of aborted band-makes-a-movie projects, perhaps only the Beatles’ supposed “Hobbit” and the Rolling Stones’ “A Clockwork Orange” rate higher on the WTF? scale than the unfinished, barely started “Who Killed Bambi?,” the Sex Pistols-Roger Ebert-Russ Meyer collaboration. And the man who brought together the most dangerous band in late-70s Britain, the titan of chest-crazed cinema, and the most important American film critic since Pauline Kael together was one Malcolm McLaren.

McLaren, who owned London’s infamous “SEX” shop with girlfriend Vivienne Westwood before helping create John Lydon’s Sex Pistols, died of cancer in Switzerland on Thursday at age 64.

Sad news yesterday, with the announcement of the death of impresario, manager, film producer and punk godfather Malcolm McLaren. Born in 1946, in London, McLaren started out as a fashion designer at art school, opening a clothing shop with his then girlfriend Vivienne Westwood in 1971. Through this, he designed stage outfits for the New York Dolls, and from there became the manager of a band called The Strand, rearranging the line up and bringing in frontman John Lydon to form the band that would become known as The Sex Pistols.

We never thought we’d use the words Sex Pistols and Madonna in the same sentence, but then again, there are a lot of things about the upcoming, and highly ambitious “W.E.” that we couldn’t believe we were reporting.

The film, starring Vera Farmiga and Abbie Cornish, is a highly ambitious tale that will feature parallel narratives centering on the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson — which led to the royal’s abdication — as well as a contemporary story following a woman, Wally Winthrop, with romantic problems of her own, in addition to an obsession with the life of the Duchess of Windsor.

The soundtrack to the forthcoming “The Runaways” biopic has been revealed and it’s pretty much what you might expect, though that’s not a bad thing at all.

The ’70s based rock saga about Joan Jett’s all-girl teen rock band earned mixed reviews when it premiered at Sundance, though it seemed everyone agreed that Michael Shannon steals the show as the sleazebag manager/promoter Kim Fowley.

But whatever the merits of the film, the soundtrack seems like a solid evocation of the period featuring tracks by David Bowie, MC5, The Stooges, Sex Pistols and (duh) The Runaways.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains” is a lost classic that finally got its proper DVD release, via the venerable Rhino entertainment complex, this past Tuesday. The 1981 cult classic stars a ridiculously young, ridiculously made up Diane Lane as our heroine Corrine Burns and Laura Dern at her side as fellow Stain and cousin Jessica McNeil. In the audio commentary below the ladies talk about the music from ‘The Fabulous Stains’, managing to name check famous cable show Night Flight, The Delta 5 and admit during the filming they were listening to The B-52’s “Rock Lobster” like crazy.
