Tribeca ’10: ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’ Is A Spastic Rock Biopic Debacle

We’re still catching up from the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival and frankly, we don’t have a lot to say about this one.

Erratic, tonally garish, dysfunctional and all over the map, Mat Whitecross might have done a fine job on the documentary, “The Road To Guantanamo Bay,” but the Ian Dury biopic, “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” based on the titular song that made the proto-punk group the Blockhead‘s semi-famous, is a clown-ish rock flick that we’d rather soon forget.

‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’ Helmer Mat Whitecross Will Next Adapt David Peace’s ‘GB84’

Andy Serkis’ magnetic lead performance aside, we weren’t particularly big fans of Mat Whitecross’s Ian Dury biopic “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” (we’ve got our full review from Tribeca coming soon). Having said that, Whitecross, who started out working with Michael Winterbottom, clearly has some potential as a filmmaker, and he sat down with Coming Soon recently to talk about what he’s got lined up in the future.

First up appears to be an adaptation of a novel by Tokyo-based British crime writer David Peace.

2010 Tribeca Film Festival Adds ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock N’ Roll’, Plus Jay Baruchel’s ‘The Trotsky’ & More…

Having just slightly recovered from our 2010 SXSW Film Festival experience, we’re realizing another festival is almost on us again (sigh, yes, it’s a good problem to have). But we’re also realizing we’re a bit behind with our 2010 Tribeca Film Festival line-up news.

And fittingly, right on cue, today a few more titles were announced. And… ok, so we’re not dazzled by today’s announcements, but there is some decent stuff including the British rock biopic “Sex & Drugs & Rock N’ Roll,” starring Andy Serkis as Ian Dury of Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

First Look: Andy Serkis As Ian Dury In ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock N’ Roll’

Do we all remember the news of the biopic for pre-punk, British pub-rock star Ian Dury titled, “Sex & Drugs and Rock N’ Roll” (the title of his most famous song; yes, he coined that phrase).

As we reported in April, Andy Serkis, erstwhile CGI-facialist for Peter Jackson (Golem in the “LOTR”series, “King Kong”) is playing Dury and the supporting cast — Ray Winstone, Olivia Williams, Naomie Harris, Noel Clarke, Toby Jones, MacKenzie Crook and Bill Milner — is rather excellent.

Andy Serkis To Star In Ian Dury Biopic, ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’

A choice assortment of U.K. talent have signed on for a biopic of British rock star Ian Dury titled, “Sex & Drugs and Rock N’ Roll.”

First and foremost is the Andy Serkis, erstwhile CGI-facialist for Peter Jackson (Golem in the “LOTR”series, “King Kong”), who goes from sideplayer to one of his most prominent leading roles.

Other Brit thesps who have joined the cast include Ray Winstone, Olivia Williams, Naomie Harris, Noel Clarke, Toby Jones, MacKenzie Crook and Bill Milner.
