Synopsis: In a future where humans can survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness “re-sleeved” into new bodies, the lone surviving soldier from a movement opposing resleevement is downloaded into a new body by an aristocrat, who was recently killed, and tasks him with finding who had him murdered.

Not a whole lot was previously known about Netflix’s new series, “Seven Seconds.” We knew that it starred Regina King and was to be partially directed by “The Accountant” helmer Gavin O’Connor. We knew that it was created by Veena Sud, the executive producer and writer behind the critically acclaimed “The Killing.” As far as the series’ plot is concerned, for months all its official Netflix page said was this: “Tensions run high in Jersey City after an African American teenager is critically injured by a cop.” Netflix also recently released this creepy fifteen-second teaser, which doesn’t do much in the way of expanding on the central premise of this show.

Now it’s time for TV. Back at the start of December, we ran down the 100 films that we’re most looking forward to across 2018, and we picked out some festival favorites that we’ve already seen and know are worth checking out too. But even with 250 hours worth or so of promising art and entertainment, that barely scratches the surface of what people will be talking about in terms of moving images, because, well, we don’t know if you heard, but TV’s gotten really good.

While no one actually knows for sure, the word around the digital campfire the past couple of days is that Netflix has quietly cut back on licensed programming by 50% over the past four years. The theory is that with their continued push to create their own TV shows and films, paying to license somebody else’s catalog of material is less attractive. Again, since Netflix doesn’t share their data on anything, it’s speculation at this point, but there’s no doubt that the streaming giant is eager to continue making their own content.
